The thing that separates Les from Saban, Petrino, Meyer, etc

is his EGO, or lack there of.
He realizes he is not a perfect coach and is willing to listen to the other coaches.
He doesnt have fits of rage (Saban or Petrino anyone?) when things arent going his way.
He stays calm and collected, and I think it has clearly rubbed off on the players.
We are blessed to have a coach that is as friendly and good-natured as Les is.

when i look at all the other coaches around:
saban, mullen, spurrier, petrino, brian kelley, muschamp, dooley
They are all angry men. Richt is the only one i can think of that isn't by all appearances an a-hole

Listening to his current/former players talk about him, they would LITERALLY take a bullet for Les. And that will be the difference on January 9th.

i think you are spot on about his ego. of course, every man has an ego it's just that les's ego is in balance. it's like he's a guru or something. many ultra successful people have egos that need constant feeding and eventually they become bigger than reality so their "ego monster" destroys what made them great in the first place. i agree with your post that our coach doesn't have that monster.

Spot on. This is what makes him a great recruiter as well.
At LSU the football coach is the face of the university. I dont think we could ask for a better person to represent LSU.

I would have went with "class" but that's good too.

Having class comes with keeping your ego in check

I think hes a lil bit more down to earth than the rest

In addition, he is great ambassador for the SEC and here is an example.
What other corch would have been so accommodating towards Alabama in saying:
a.) he'd be "honored to play them again" (said after the Nov 5th win)
b.) vote them #2 at the end of the season knowing full-well that they are the only team capable of beating us
c.) continue to be the consulate gentleman and say all the right things when asked about the natty and the controversial matchup (while on stage accepting the Corch of the Year Award Thursday night and last Sunday during the BCS Selection Show)
If the shoe was on the other foot, neither of those two assholes/corches (Satan or Cornholeino) would have done the same. Instead they'd be openly lobbying to keep us out.
I'd go as far as saying that Les' character and candor helped put the gumps in the game.
Bamanation owes Les a thank you for the invite to the party.

To understand Les, you must have The Want.

Yeah. I mean "having class" would have pretty much summed it all up. But then there wouldn't be much of a thread.

I agree with all of this.
The thing that Les does that very, VERY few coaches do is recruit the right players, not just the "best". He not only recruits skill and physical ability, but character and integrity. He recruits the guys who are more than willing to play their hearts out for the name on their helmets rather than the name on the back of their jersey. Our team, every player, has an internal drive and motivation to play every down like its their last play they will ever play. Les succeeds through recruiting the right players. I don't care if our class is "ranked" by some website, I fully trust that we have the best players that fit into our true team mentality.
Les doesn't throw tantrums on the sideline. He doesn't get upset if a player isnt running a route to the exact inch he wants. He provides the guidelines for our players, and trusts them to play. He gives each and every player his full and complete trust to do what they feel on the field. No amount of film study or practice an opponent can do can account for the trust Miles has in our players. He is unpredictable. He is a true enigma. He is a true coach. He doesn't run a dictatorship (Nicky). He has the right coaching philosophy, and we are reaping the benefits. He brings so much joy to the game of football, not only for the fans, but the players, and in the big picture, that's the point. Good luck finding that in many others.
Id say bow down to Miles, but kinda knowing the person that he is, he wouldn't want you to.

He doesn't take himself too seriously.
His spring isn't wound so tight that it makes his butt hurt.
His sense of humility and team rubs off on his players, they think of themselves as a team. Especially there ain't no I in Team.
