Great thread! Should move this (or recreate it) in the SEC Rant as well!

What's impressive is this includes the tail end of the Dinardo era. I think I just got sick.

1972-1994 --> 2-9
1995-2010 --> 11-3

Added in the full record from each era. I think it shows dramatically the differences, and also pretty much adheres to the two golden eras of Tiger football. People need to remember that prior to this most recent era, our best teams were during the Cholly Mac era. Yes Dietzel had two great years, but Cholly Mac had a nice run during the 60s. Those two Cotton Bowl wins in the 60s were two of the greatest wins in LSU history.

I'm thinking of doing a 1958-1973 versus 1995-2010 comparison thread.

I'd like to see that, Doc. I have always had an affinity for the great Charles McClendon, an extremely class act who spent his entire career having to coach in Johnny Vaught's and Bear Bryant's shadows. It was sad to me how his career ended at LSU. I don't know if you've read "It Never Rains" but the chapter when John Ed talks about seeing Coach Mac right before he died is tough to get through.

Dietzel had three great teams - 58, 59 and 61. Some people would rank that 61 team as the best of the three.

True. 61 was a great team too. I think they finished No. 1 in one of the polls or services.

The 62 9-1-1 team was ranked #1 by Berryman. Hard to figure how they could be ranked ahead of the 10-0 Ole Miss team that beat them in Tiger Stadium.

Noticed that too - Didn't I read somewhere that Bama had the most Bowl wins in the history of college football

Absolutely true. Gerry DiNardo, for all his failings overall, did indeed bring back the magic to an LSU program on the brink of true collapse. After 6 straight losing seasons, attendance falling to catastrophic all-time lows (relatively speaking), and the general malaise and funk about LSU Football, another 3 or 4 years of losing may well have pushed the Tigers over an irrevocable brink. Those three years of success and the improved (somewhat) recruiting were the shot of adrenaline needed to keep the program alive long enough for a really good coach (Saban) to come along and revive it.

DiNardo brought back the "magic"; Saban brought back the football.

True, and DiNardo brought Faulk (and Booger, and Herb).
