You forgot the 3 points for giving at least $100, it is added to the other points for a total of 20 points each year giving $5000, or 35 points for each year giving $10000.
If he has no points right now he would almost certainly have to give at least $10000, but it would be better to give $5k now and $5k at the beginning of next year for 40 points.
Even that would be borderline for 4 tickets in the lower bowl I think. 4 in the upper deck or 2 in the lower bowl shouldn't be a problem at that level.

That said, if you do the math on that vs what you'd spend buying tix on the open market, it's going to take 5-10 years to break even.
1. It's not like it's a car that I'm going to get rid of in a few years. I'm 36 and hopefully will be attending games for at least the next 40 years.
2. I'd rather give my money to the university than some scalper charging a premium for tickets.
3. I get a tax deduction for my donations and I believe I can deduct a portion of the Tradition Fund.
4. When I die I can pass my priority points on to my kids/grandkids.

I have been paying on average about $250 per seat home and away regular season games of choice over the past 6 years on the open market. I only attend the top tier games 2 or 3 per year.

Dead on again.
I do it because I'm comfortable with making donations to the school for not just the tax benefit, but because I want to contribute to "do my part" to helping them be the best of the best of the best
I don't want to pay somebody elses TAF fees year after year.

This is what my Dad is thinking. He wants it to be a family thing that he doesn't have to worry about every game.

i'm pretty sure if he walked into the TAF office with a checkbook and asked how much they'd tell him (as opposed to not telling him over the phone).
