I don't think he will be the first choice. But he might be the BEST choice of those who would genuinely consider taking the job.
Saban and Dabo aren't coming. Don't waste time there. Day isn't leaving OSU. Kirby isn't leaving Georgia. Brian Kelly might be interested...but LSU will think he isn't a good fit. Reily is happy at OU considering the fact they will be joining the SEC soon.
That is essentially the list of regular playoff participants. So with them off the list, where does LSU go from there?
Bob Stoops fits the Woodward profile and is available right now. Proven winner. The question is does Stoops actually want to get back into the pressure cooker? Even before the butthole incident Urban Meyer was quickly figuring out he isn't a NFL HC. Could have been a perfect match...but the BOS/Admin will likely shy away from interest in him.
That starts to whittle down the list. James Franklin would check many boxes...but does the PA native want to leave PA? Fickell might have to consider it given that the OSU job doesn't look like it is going to be open any time soon. But is LSU the right "fit" for him? Is Matt Campbell "high profile" enough?
Assuming Bob Stoops has no interest, I think Franklin will be the top person of interest because the AD AND BOS would be ok with him. If he's out, then you are left with guys who aren't "sure things".
Kiffin comes with concerns. But you know he has the arrogance that would LOVE to dominate the SEC. He would relish beating and pissing Saban off to no end. That probably can't happen (at least regularly) at OM. For the majority of Saban's Alabama tenure LSU was the most consistent rival...even with bozos at HC.
Worse case scenario, Kiffin would be a clown show that doesn't produce big enough results and ultimately gets the program in trouble.
Best case scenario, he's the second coming of Steve Spurrier. Brash, arrogant, unafraid to say things to piss off opposing coaches/fanbases, but has a great offensive mind and LOVES to be hated by opposing programs. If he is going to be a college HC...he wants to be the guy that sends Saban kicking and screaming into retirement. That's not going to happen at OM. It may not happen at LSU either. But he knows LSU can give him the platform to do it.
