Not saying he's the answer, but what I am saying is that we're wasting him thus far.. Sometimes I wonder if it even crosses les miles mind that this guy can start at QB.

If the coaches worked with him for a significant period of time doing the right things, I think he is smart enough and composed enough to be a pocket passer with the option to pass first and run second if it's there.

i heard theres a want to get him 20-25 touches in the bowl game, but the opportunity might not present itself.

There will first have to be a need in order to sustain the want.

He has an "interesting" throwing motion. And this is against high school teams. Yea, those teams are good, but those defenses are nothing compared to the SEC. Do you really think Russell Shepard will consistently break runs of 50 yards or more every time he gets the ball against the likes of Ole Miss, Florida, Alabama? No way. I'm not saying Shepard isn't a good player, and I do believe we didn't use him as we should, but some of y'all are going out and acting like he is Jesus in a football uniform. Do you honestly think that even if RS was starting at quarterback that the play calling would instantly get better? It wouldn't. I hope we give more snaps to RS in the bowl game. But 20-25? Ha. That will never happen.

I do realize S.E.C. defenses are twice as fast as high school defense and that he won't break runs for 20+ yards that often (might be more than you think though). Realistically though he could consistently break runs for 7-8 yards if running from the pocket and that my friend is a very nice thing to have every time you drop back and the field opens up a LITTLE. I really think this guy is just a playmaker and can do nothing but good.

I was just wondering what Malzahn (sp.?) would do with this guy. I'm pretty sure Florida, AU, or MooState would really use him well.

***The fact that he's modest and not like most guys of his talent and ability, and that he has a great head on his shoulders and willing to put in more work than everyone else is a big reason I think so highly of him.

Yeah sure and it's even better that he bleeds purple and gold. I'm surprised LSU was the only school to offer him a shot at QB. Has he really gottebn that shot?

Thats what we all said about JJ in the beginning. But the fact of the matter is that he will drop back and get sacked before he even gets a chance to read the field, much less run. A quarterback is only as good as his receivers and his offensive line. The offensive line makes him terrible right now. I don't deny that he would bring a lot of explosive plays to our offense and we would benefit greatly from it, but realistically, he wouldn't be able to do much with our porous o-line. And if he gets wrapped up in the back field, by looking at him, I think I can safely say that he isn't going to get out of a sack by players like Rolando McClain.

And I'm worried about how well he could take that many hits. Right now we only have him taking, what, 4 snaps? On a good day? But when you start getting those numbers up towards 10, 15, or 20, those hits start adding up and RS might not be strong enough yet to take those kinds of licks.

And yes, he is modest and I think highly of him as well, but right now, I wouldn't go so far to say we would be competing for a national championship

I know every week we always say, "RS will get more snaps in this game. RS will throw a pass" and it never comes. But against Penn State, I am prepared to say, yes, RS will finally get more snaps. Not as many as some want him to get but he will get more than the usual 2 or 3. And yes, Russell Shepard will throw a pass or 2 against a good Penn State team that won't be able to watch any film on the guy.

i have no doubt in my mind that he could avoid the rush by anybody.

You are assuming mclain or spikes have better foot skills. NO WAY.

if he stays in the pocket and it colapses, yeah he will most likely go down. But then agian I like his chances more then anyone to avoid a sack. plus a blitz could really backfire agaisnt someone like shepard.

after watching the passing part of that video, he throws that ball with ease. makes me wonder if hes having trouble throwing a college ball.

I'm saying when they hit you, you aren't going to just bounce off and go. I'm not saying that RS will roll out and McClain or Spikes will chase him down. I'm saying that if RS runs and he gets wrapped up by these guys, he isn't going to break through a tackle. He is going to the ground. Unlike what we have here, other defenses know how to tackle consistently.

For the life of me I don't understand why we didn't run a spread option offense like this in the open field and then switch to a more power orientated offense when we hit the 30's and the field shortened up. It would have been LSU vs Texas in the NC instead of Alabama, JJ and RS were made for this!
