Is Zay ready to go? What about JK? I did not see if Kelly mentioned either in team status report. Guess I am missing something?

Alexander was cleared for "full go" early in camp.
So he's healthy, but he's not back in full on football shape yet.
he'll likely get playing time this weekend, but might be a game or two before he's really back.

Alexander isn’t 100%
Sure he is. He was a full participant at scrimmage last weekend & was running with the 2s

Don’t think so.

He is Johnson, not Brown. And he was getting some run with the 1st team CBs and appears to be #3 or 4 and should play a lot. Brown from Ohio State was running 1st team nickel last we heard. So he should play a lot too. Whether either of them are any good or not is anybody’s guess.

Yeah JK should see some PT at CB.
Brown was getting reps in the secondary, but not at CB. Must’ve been a nickel or dime package.
Pretty deep at CB honestly - Stamps, Woodland, Sage, Zy, JK, Toviano

I know you’re a big fan of Zy. I think he’s huge in 2 things that will really make a bid difference in the entire DB room. How fast can he get back to trusting his knee and prove to the coaches that they can trust him to run him out there. And how fast they can trust Woodland to go out there and be consistent. Seems pretty clear he’s out best play-maker at CB, just has too many bad reps right now to go along with his highlights.
I’m looking at that bye week after Week 5. If we can somehow just escape Vegas with even an ugly win over SC, we should be able to work Zy and PJ in a little at a time over the next 4 games, and really insert them into the rotation going into the Ole Miss game with 2 weeks to prepare. Stamps will still start, but if those 2 can play a lot and be counted on to play well, then we can move some guys around to maybe their more natural positions to have a better overall 2 deep at all the DB positions.
That’s why this USC game is so, so important. If we can do enough to win against Lincoln Riley’s offense with a mature QB and their weapons at WR with our DB room probably being the worst it will be all year, that should really set the DBs up well to not only be serviceable, but actually be good. And if Baker can trust the CBs to hold up in man with maybe just 1 safety over the top, it could REALLY allow him to get super exotic and creative with showing a bunch of different looks with the LBs, the ends, the other safety, etc….
In the SEC it does all start with stopping the run, but right behind that is having CBs who can be trusted to hold up just long enough allow our other guys to get home. And like I said in another thread, if our CBs are good enough to allow our edges under the tutelage of Peeples to get home just rushing 4, sheeeeit. The defense could develop into a strength by the end of the year instead of a liability. Which would make us a problem.

_____________
Not thinking of Sage as CB this year. He should be in the safety spots. We have been asking him to do too much so far in his time, and think we should let him be more focused. I agree that we appear to be deeper than we have been the past couple of years. We need it to show up on the field.

Being cleared and being 100% are not the same

It will be interesting to see how much he plays. Baker likes using the Star position, which is where Burns was moved. That is basically a 3rd Safety in the box and would take the place of a Nickle.
I’m guessing we see a fair amount of Nickle and even Dime playing USC, but how much Burns mixes in on early downs and to blitz will be interesting.
