Hester is one of the guys that the tradition is actually based upon just like Mauck. The tradition wasn't really much of a thing then.

Tre, however, wasn't expected to be back after his junior year and was voted to get the number by the players.

If anyone really wants to stick to the tradition, then they should cite that CEO actually went against it by appointing CL18 without the vote of the players for the first time.

And CL asked to share it with JDM. The tradition has a life of it's own.

No doubt.

Both of these traditions are so new that they are definitely still developing. I think that they are both positive influences on the program moving forward.
