It is an enormous urban myth that Auburn slowed down LSU. Auburn didn't slow down LSU, the extremely soggy field conditions that day made Ensminger go into super conservative play not to lose playcalling mode. Especially on third and fourth down and short situations.
Had Ensminger called the plays as he usually does, LSU would have blown Auburn out like everyone else. Nevertheless, LSU still generated 508 yards of total offense on Auburn. As LSU moved the ball all over Auburn at will. Had it not been for the super conservative play not to lose playcalling especially on 3rd and 4th short situations, LSU would have blown Auburn out like everyone else. Nonetheless, it didn't matter cause LSU won the game.
