His parents did a great job considering what they had to work with.

Les Miles would be a great coach for the Michigan Wolverines.

Les Miles did not berate his quarterback for stupidly taking a sack that pushed his team out of field goal range. Les Miles did not blame his quarterback and running back for losing more yardage on the following play to put his team back on their own side of the 50 yard line. Les Miles did not give up on his players on fourth and infinity with a "Hail Mary" being the only way to get a first down. And Les Miles did not put his kicker into the game with only one second left and an IMPOSSIBLE angle to the uprights, only to see him fail and carry the blame of missing a short attempt at a field goal for the next 11 months.
Les didn't lose this game by himself. It wasn't all coaching. How many easy passes did LaFell drop? Yeah, he caught the tough ones, but there were a couple critical passes that SHOULD have been caught. How many times did the defense allow McCluster to slip out of their grasp to gain a first down when he should have been stopped for a short gain or even a loss on initial contact?
A coach can only recruit and coach. It is up to the players to take the field and win the game.
And, I don't fault y'all in saying this, but please hear me out. . . LSU is a university, a GREAT university, and my alma mater. Football is a highly visible, but entirely non-essential part of that university. A university exists to provide further education to develop the doctors, engineers, and leaders of our nation. Football, and other athletic programs are not the measure of a university.
That being said, I still love it when the Tigers bring home a national championship. And Les has given us a championship. He even turned down an opportunity to coach at his won alma mater to remain coach at an institution that had been entirely foreign to him until he had been offered the head coaching position. Were I to be coaching a championship caliber team, and LSU called me to return home to coach my alma mater, I could not have resisted the call to return.
Les Miles has shown loyalty and devotion to the LSU fan base more than either of the other two coaches that won football national championships. That alone is sufficient reason for me to show some loyalty to himin return.
In summary, I quote an adage oft heard at LSU until very recently:
"Les is more."
