He's going to be a top 15/20 in the world type player. He's really got the whole package.

And he loves him some LSU.

What exactly is he trying to get exempt from by his ranking?
I heard them mention it last week and earlier but missed details.

I could be wrong, but believe he is trying to get an exemption from having to play and win on the Web.com tour before being able to move up to the PGA tour. If he keeps playing the way he is he may get to play in major at some point this year.

Not sure, but with his performance on the tour, his full time card isn't far away.

He had the Jack Nicklaus exemption for a tournament or two, then won the Barbasol Shootout to get another one.

Had he gotten top 10 last week, he would've had a special exemption for the year I think and he doubled late to get 12th.

If he gets top 7 this week he gets it.

A top-seven finish at Bay Hill could earn him special temporary status and unlimited sponsor's exemptions through the rest of the 2017-18 PGA Tour season.

The 21-year-old earned $131,625 and roughly 59 unofficial FedExCup points with this week's effort. That would leave him with 181 points for the season -- about 88 points shy (a seventh-place finish is worth 90 points) of earning the special status.

Non-members can earn a “special temporary status” by accumulating as many FedExCup points as the 150th-place finisher on the previous season's list (Rick Lamb, 269 points).

Upon earning “Special temporary status,” Burns can use unlimited sponsor’s exemptions in an attempt to earn a PGA Tour card. If Burns earns enough FedExCup points to finish No. 125 on the final 2017-18 list, he would get a PGA Tour card for 2018-19. For reference, last year, J.J. Henry was No. 125 with 365 points.

Moving forward, Burns will have no fewer than three PGA Tour starts before the summer begins. In addition to Bay Hill, Burns already has starts lined up at The Memorial (Jack Nicklaus' tournament) and the FedEx St. Jude Classic near Memphis, Tennessee.

In all likelihood, Burns will have at least four more PGA Tour starts to earn the special status. In 2013, Jordan Spieth earned special temporary status on the PGA Tour, and then won the John Deere to immediately earn his Tour card.

In five PGA Tour starts as a professional, Burns has made four cuts and earned nearly $400,000.

Also, LSU fans who don't know him will love him.

He's a good ole southern baw that packs a dip in when he plays and loves to hunt

He had a fat dip packed in while he played with Tiger Woods a few weeks ago...and beat Tiger.

I agree. I’m glad Burns is doing well and will hopefully become relevant on tour so I have an LSU person to consistently root for.

I was hoping Smylie would be that person as he seems to be a good hearted and fun personality. He had a good season a couple years ago, and combined with his notoriety for who he hung around (Spieth, Thomas, Fowler), he was quickly making a name. However, this year has been a horrible one for him as he continues to struggle big time and missing cuts left and right. He is already 14+ for this weeks tournament. Wouldn’t be suprised to see him back on Web.com next year unless he turns things around quick.

Smylie doesn't have quite the natural talent as Sam Burns IMO. But I think he can be good enough to keep his tour card, he's just having an off year. So is Andrew Loupe, who is a close friend of mine. Loupe has insane natural talent, he just needs to get healthy and put it all together.

Yeah, I pull for Loupe as well when I can; but have noticed he seems to be struggling this year too. Hope he can pull it together.

Peterson is another who seems to be inconsistent at times, but has bounced back pretty well from injury this year. Just doesn’t seem like he plays in enough tournaments though. Idk if that is due to lingering effects of the injury and needing more rest time b/w play or if it has to do with his status.

As an aside, with recent success of LSU golf team, I’m hoping to have several former Tigers to pull for on the PGA tour in coming years.

Peterson tweeted a week or two ago that he was planning on hanging it up and work for a living. Seems burned out on the tour life.

Interesting. I had been wondering that based on some of his other social media presence. Just looked like he was enjoying his new baby, the farm, and hunting, and not very focused on golf.

As a fan, I hate to hear it though. He was a good college player and had a shot of having a decent to good pro career. But if his heart isn’t in it, I can understand wanting to hang it up.

Peterson doesn't want to put the time and work in with a young family. Passion isn't there for golf. Can't fault him for being honest with himself and doing what makes him happy.

He's also very politically outspoken on social media (always takes it down though), to the point it actually hurt his ability to get and maintain sponsors. Said some shite about being anti-gay marriage and a few other pro-gun things. Sponsors aren't looking for controversy like that.

He also married very rich, which helps his decision making.

ETA:

I knew him in passing in college from hanging around other golfers and I had no idea what his political leanings were, so all that aside, he is a cocky prick and a tool bag. Polar opposite of Loupe, who everyone loves to be around. So I can't say I'm sad to see him leave the tour.
