Random Portal transfer question- can we do free agency?

Ridiculous thought, I know

But final exams are May 6-11. Final grades are due by May 15.
Summer classes start May 28.

The last SEC series (Ole Miss) starts May 16, the SEC tourney late May, Regionals first week of June etc.

Can the NCAA stop a dude from transferring and joining another team for the postseason run? Like, LSU could use another pitcher and probably a shortstop. IN THEORY, can someone offer a big NIL deal and bring someone in?

Before you laugh and reject this out of hand, I'm asking "in theory", with the way the NCAA is powerless with the portal nowadays. Is there any written rule preventing a late addition to the roster?

Why not just play Skenes and Crews if there are no rules?

No the team can't add, or No the NCAA couldn't prevent it?

Let's say for the sake of argument, there's a guy elsewhere who's a good pitcher, and their team sucks. He transfers to LSU, enrolls in summer classes... are you FORBIDDEN from adding him to the roster for the regional? At this point, he's an active student. You probably can't give him a scholarship, but Gordon could sure give him an NIL deal.

I remember football players doing emergency/spot duty in both baseball and basketball, in the past. Those guys (going back to the Chicken Pox outbreak in '86) sure weren't on the roster at the start of the year. But they were LSU students, and athletic enough to meet the need.

No one has challenged the transfer date restrictions so for anyone to do that they would have to go to court first.

In Theory, your question is silly, in reality, it is stupid.

You can call it silly and stupid, and I'd be inclined to agree with you.

However, I would also say this- I'm willing to bet it gets challenged, and that happens within a few years. The NCAA has lost just about every challenge to the transfer rule so far, and sooner or later someone is going to push the envelope. You will have a team that needs another good pitcher or bat, and you will have a guy who meets that need, stuck on a smaller school team whose season is over. They will enroll, and challenge.
I see this becoming a thing in SEC baseball (where the sport makes some money) by 2030, unless there's some specific effort to prevent it.

Let's be honest- as recently as the Joe Burrow era, it was rare to see starting QBs transfer unless they were grad transfers. Now, it's an annual occurrence, and lots of those guys are underclassmen. It's only a matter of time before someone does it in-season, and I expect the academic calendar will play a part in that.

In theory if Skenes and Crews stay one more year we’re not having to theororize.

Bump

In case anyone is wondering why, there's this thread
LINK referring to to this LINK;

Council changes transfer rules, permits immediate eligibility for transfers who are academically eligible/in good standing at prev. school & meet progress-toward-degree requirements at new school.

Decision not final until meeting ends Thurs, must be ratified by DI Board Monday.

As I noted in the first post, baseball's season spans from the spring semester, and extends into the summer.
Obviously basketball covers fall and spring.

If you have "immediate eligibility for transfers", there's no way to legally enforce a random set portal date; it would be whenever you can get enrolled. If Tommy White (for example) enrolls in Arkansas' summer semester, he would be eligible.
Also you could have guys jump to better teams in basketball for spring semester.

You KNOW this is coming. Somebody will try it, and any restriction will fail in court. And the era of Gentlemen's Agreements between schools, coaches etc not to do this to each other is over now. The players control it, not the programs. Arkansas or A&M would not turn a Tommy White down for the postseason, and Kentucky etc would not refuse a possible starter at a spot they need to fill going into Christmas break.
