A former LSU Safety was saying he had the same injury several years ago. It took less time than expected for him to recover, and he said he made a complete recovery.
Every situation can be different, but my best guess is that LSU is doing the right thing by being extra careful with this matter. The #1 thing for Leavitt is getting used to his teammates, especially the WR's.
No games will be won or lost because an experienced QB isn't participating in 11-on-11 drills in March.
