And now we are closer than we ever were to having competitive facilities.
Again, this is the first time in program history that our track and field teams have had their own lockers and meeting rooms. We've upgraded. Is there still room for more?
Sure. But at least we've made significant progress.

You just described just about every project being built over that way, with the addition of "overflow lot for Tiger Stadium."
Even the new UREC fields will be constructed with parking in mind...

Phase I
Phase I is the UREC Fields at River Road. This project is approx. $5.5 million in construction. It includes 8 multi-purpose sports fields and 4 softball fields set up in a wagon wheel configuration. The support building will also be expanded so that all of our mowers and field maintenance equipment can be housed at this location. It also includes 2 of the 8 fields made with a product called “Fiber Soils,” so that we can assist Athletics on the 7-8 Saturday football games with parking. This phase is anticipated to be complete in Spring 2014. During this phase we also moved the Challenge Course from River Rd. to directly across from UREC’s current entrance and future entrance.
-Approximate construction cost: Approx. $5.5 million
-Anticipated completion: Spring 2014

The new sand volleyball team needs a facility. Mangos was used as the teams home site for the inaugural season. Some rumors going around that they were going to turn the current tennis stadium into a sand complex for the team.

That's the last I heard as well. Doesn't seem as if it would take a lot of money to convert W.T. "Dub" Robinson Stadium into a sand volleyball facility.
I believe the holdup there is waiting on the new tennis facility to be completed before beginning renovations on the old one.
After all, the tennis players still need a place to train.
Edit: Just looked it up...
quote:
The overall size of a tennis doubles court is 36 feet wide by 78 feet long. The singles court is slightly narrower measuring 27 feet wide. Both singles and doubles courts share the same length.
quote:
International beach volleyball is played on a court measuring 8 m by 16 m, or approximately 26¼ ft. by 52½ ft, for doubles. This represents the court itself with no additional boundary to keep spectators back. For play with teams of three, four or six players, the area size increases to 14 m by 24 m, or approximately 46 ft. by 79 ft.
So it looks like the stadium could easily be re-purposed.

Scroll up. The sand volleyball court will be built for peanuts.

The solution to ABS traffic is to build a pedestrian bridge over Nicholson.
That would be great.
It would, but in order for it to get across Nicholson (would have to at least cross twice, or some sort of above intersection thing) it would have to be absolutely enormous. I'm not saying it couldn't be done, I'm just saying it won't. And most planners will tell you that groups of people are generally lazy as shite. Many, many people will just cross the street on foot anyway before walking up and down a ramp.
Putting another entrance/exit to the parking lot from Nicholson would be very helpful.

Damn they have been busy. Glad to hear they have addressed those two facilities(even though they should have banked that track). So yeah I now agree that the nat should be next, must be why they are throwing 1.8 mil at it. Unfortunately that's not nearly enough. I think it would take around 25-30 mil for a new facility that's worth building. That's a sum probably too large for TAF to be willing to spend.

I disagree, they've been willing to spend what it takes to build competitive facilities in the past, and $30 million shouldn't be too much. LSU just spent $80 million to expand TS, and there are no other projects on the horizon that would cost as much.
As I said before, the last round of TAF improvements altogether totaled around $105 million. So a new swimming facility could easily be a part of the next round, along with adding more suites to ABS, concourse and restroom renovations to TS, a few small projects like in the last round, and maintenance projects.
I could see all that being done together, at far less than the $105 million they just spent. I'd estimate all those coming in at around $90 million.

Just looked up a few sand volleyball courts around the country...
Florida State
Arizona
UAB
Compare with LSU's W.T. "Dub" Robinson Stadium
I found this link regarding the cost of building a sand volleyball facility from scratch:
[link=(ConStruCtion CoStS
Actual court costs will vary depending on the site selected
and specifications developed for the court. Expense costs
for labor and materials may vary a great deal depending on
economic differences around the country. An anticipated cost
could range from $20,000 to $40,000 per court.
So really, it looks like the old tennis stadium could be easily and cheaply converted to serve as a sand volleyball complex. Let's use the high estimate and say 5 courts x $40,000 = $200,000. Peanuts for an athletic budget like ours, that just spent over $105 million on various athletic facilities, including $8.5 million for a new tennis facility.
And as I said, the main holdup at this point would seem to be waiting on the completion of the new tennis facility. Because our tennis teams still need a place to practice in the mean time.
