I see your point and we just see opposite on this. Same principal...much different method. I think we can agree on this:

Get him in the rotation.

Yes?

Fri-Ranaudo
Sat-Matulis
Sun-Ott

Give Bert a shot at closing with Cotten/Mormann/Rittiner on leases.

Man, at least one out of Ross/Bradshaw/Bourgeios tandem needs to step up, they have been PATHETIC.

Yes, definently I agree with you, Ott needs to be somewhere for more than 2 innings a weekend. I just don't want his arm getting torn up.

Adam, you're a passionate fan like me and I respect your opinion even if it differs from mine. We have two things in common: we're not PM and we're both wanting 7 titles. So, no disrespect. I think we're all just frustrated fans.

And yep, Bert should be seasoned by now to at least attempt to become a closer...just not huge on him, but when he's ON, he is ON. When he's off, he's terribly gone wrong. Like I said, just a lotta pitchers sitting in the dugout collecting dust.

Bruh, I think he might be right about that. Ineffective a better synonym?

Why is Mainieri so overprotective of Bertuccini? I know he's pretty hit or miss... when he's on he's great, or when he's off he's horrible, but he's been pretty good all season.

Mainieri only likes to bring him into an inning already in progress and doesn't let him start the next inning. Mainieri said Bert is most comfortable that way. I really don't understand why it matters if he starts the inning or not. Bertuccini's a Senior and should have enough mental strength to be able to start an inning.

I would love to see Ott start and Bertuccini close. Bertuccini's been good enough this season to get the first shot at replacing Ott. He was the defacto closer in 2008 when Bradford wasn't available so he does have a little experience there. I also think Mainieri is wasting Bertuccini some his Senior season by only using him about 2/3s of an inning a weekend.

Bert's role has been similar to that of former MLB reliever Paul Assenmacher. He's good for one - maybe two - situational batters. BUT, he needs to be better than that. This was our 2nd most effective relief pitcher two seasons ago. If you ask me, this is the man that should step into the closer's role, but it might be too late for such to happen.

I think Ross, personally, needs to fit into the role.

Thats way too much to ask of a pitcher.

I'll give Bourgeios a pass. 1)First year 2)Sophomore 3)Had his bright spots.

If you asked Ross/Bradshaw how this season has been for them and they said anything less than Pathetic they would be lieing to you.

It looks like that "bad arse" will be vital in this weekend's series with Florida.

quote:

Mainieri has been considering starting sophomore closer Matty Ott (1-1, 2.43 ERA, 11 saves) in a Sunday game if he does not pitch a lot of relief in a Friday night game. This was how he used Louis Coleman last season and Jared Bradford in 2007 and 2008 with much success.

"But if Anthony can't go after the sixth in the first game, I may want to use Ott in the seventh," he said. "I need to make sure we try to win one game at a time. But you never know. I know that Matty will be used in a vital way."

Not really. Coleman was good, but Bradford was awful just about as many times as he was good. He was probably the most over-rated pitcher in a while, but his UNC relief outing in Omaha leaves good memories. Just saying facts...

I really hate the closer/starter hybrid role, though. If we need it with Ott, so be it. But it's an admittance that you don't have enough pitching. I'd rather starter/reliever roles be solidly defined.

You guys are going off but everyone agrees Ott needs to be moved to the rotation. I suspect that is happening this weekend given the TBAs on rotation postings.

I'd throw him on Saturday, especially with a win on Friday.

I still really like Matulis. He's looked pretty good every time out there. He just shouldn't have started the 8th on Sunday. I think Matulis is good enough to keep you in the game on Saturday.

Start Ott on Sunday and we'd have a pretty decent advantage with pretty much our ace until Ranaudo returns to form against their #3 guy.
