Coach Wade was on Off The Bench this morning with Jordy and T-Bob to talk about how summer workouts are going and outlook on the season. He is always a good interview to listen to; so here is the link and I have some notes below. Will Wade Interview

Notes:
- He and other coaches are headed out on the road tomorrow to start recruiting live period. Need to start "stacking some classes."
- Spoke about the importance of recruiting NOLA and BR areas, since that is where most of LA talent comes out of.
- Summer workouts are a bit different this year since they do not have to spend as much time on teaching culture and program building aspects. Most of that done last year and veterans teach the newbies. Allows coaches to focus more on technical skill development.
- Last year (b/c of culture) they were behind in conditioning and getting players where they needed to be. Says they have had about 4 perfect weeks so far this summer.
- Had Tremont meet with the incoming freshmen to talk about what it was like coming in as a Top 50 player to college and the lessons (and mistakes) he learned last season and what he has done to correct it. Kind of gave them an "if I had known then what I know now" speech.
- Edwards and KBW met with the Juco guys to talk to them about what it was like transferring into the program. Specifically spoke about Edwards learning that he didn't take advantage of his opportunity last summer to start working hard and earn playing time; and that it was only through an injury to another player that he got a 2nd chance during the season and finally took hold of the opportunity.
- Spoke about how much Smart has been a young leader for the team and crucial to recruiting success (even for '19 class) and eventual on court success of this freshmen class. Also said that Smart was the one who came up with the "Boot UP" slogan for the program.
- Was asked if we would see Naz, KBW, and E. Williams on the court at the same time. Said it is a possibility, but more likely to see 2 on there at a time, and only 1 at others.
- Last year the offense was based solely around ball screens, and if other teams stopped it, then they were dead. Staff has put in some "continuity" elements (motion offense) for this year to help with when other teams stop the ball screen action.

Coolest parts of interview:
- Said we have "upgraded at the 3 spot," in large part due to Marlon Taylor and development of Edwards. Gave a good background story on Taylor and how he got into basketball in h.s. Said he was a really good baseball player, and that one day the team had to go into gym for practice. When the basketball coach passed through gym, he saw Taylor dunking a baseball over and over on side goal, then told Taylor he was going to play for the basketball team and the rest was history. Taylor is still raw and learning the nuances of game, but his athletic ability covers up a lot of his "sins." Also talked about how Verge Ausberry was jokingly trying to recruit Taylor over to the football team (due to his size and athleticism) when Taylor was on his official visit and was on the sideline for the Spring Game. Wade said he reminded Verge that he oversees basketball program too and to back off.

- Ended interview saying that if they get program to where they envision it being in a few years, then they will look back and say that getting Waters and Smart were the 2 keys to turning the program around and making it what it is.

ETA: Part about NOLA/BR recruiting and team upgrading at the 3 spot.

Can't remember being this excited for an LSU basketball season in quite some time. They nailed the Will Wade hire.

Wade does a really good job of getting out actual information off interview prompts. Ton of good info from a 10 minute interview and it's great to hear some of the different changes from last year.

I love the mentorship he set up for freshman to talk with someone who was in their shoes the year before. I like hearing of the addition of some motion offense seeing that we really did get showed down on offense occasionally when we couldn't dribble-drive.

It's exciting to hear about the players that are getting it done in the summer and that the expectations don't have to be taught as much and you can concentrate on basketball.

So pumped.

One thing I've picked up on since Wade has been at LSU is that he is a straight shooter and calls it like he sees it. With him being so damn optimistic it's hard to not be very excited about the potential of this team.

Completely agree. Every time I listen to him I end up feeling I have come away with something new and not just getting a bunch of coach speak. He is very direct about a lot of things and you can tell when he is genuinely pumped about a player or situation.

This is an underrated aspect of Wade that I completely love. He incorporates a lot of leadership training and mentality to his program development. Things that will not only help the players on the court, but off of it as well.

Agree again. I think one of the best parts of this continues to show how much Wade is a coach that is willing and able to adapt to various personnel and situations. And while it wasn't talked about in this interview specifically, I continue to enjoy how he hasn't been complacent with just chalking up last season to being a complete "throw away" based on roster and expectations. Instead he and his staff have gleaned from it what they can, learning the lessons from it, and seeking new ways to improve going forward. A good example of this is how he has spoken of giving the staff their off-season homework projects such as how to improve on road game preparations and how other teams do it better.

Is really really high on Marlon Taylor. He thinks he will be really special and that we have really ungraded at the 3. Kingsby can really get after it. Said everyone is talking about the incoming class but he really likes the JUCO guys

Year 2 is when the great ones make the big jumps. They've instilled their culture, have their own players on campus, etc.

One thing that cannot be understated is how strong of a foundation he is building for the program. He is building it up in every way possible from a roster, facility, and recruiting perspective. He has garnered a sense of pride in the program amongst not only the fans, but the players as well that was missing before. These guys will go on to the NBA and still remained attached to our program and become ambassadors.

God forbid Will Wade leaves us one day for a Blue Blood, he will have left us in a FAR better place than he found us. If we kept the top 2-3 players in Louisiana at LSU every year, we could be a very solid and consistent program (in addition to 1 or 2 studs outside Louisiana). He will change the perception of our program with the kids and their coaches in this state.

Marlon is a truly freak athlete. Guy will be an NBA player.

Guy is 6'6" with a legit 42" vertical and shot 44% from 3pt and 80% from the FT line last year. He also averaged 17/10 in JUCO. He is, in my opinion, easily the most underrated recruit we have. I think he starts at the 3 day 1 and never lets go.

The main thing for me with WW is his ability to see what needs to be done and then attacking those needs.

For example, last year we were a poor rebounding and defensive team so we practiced defense and rebounding relentlessly. It didn’t help much cuz we still sucked at both but it was nice to see a coach refuse to accept that we suck in those areas and to challenge the team to be better.

Also we didn’t have enough bigs so he goes and gets 4-5 big guys to come in and help this year.

This trait will give WW a longer leash imo. If the team doesn’t gel right away, I’m confident that WW will recognize why it’s not working and do his best to make the adjustments necessary to fix it.

Or to Emmitt

Or to Naz

Or to Darius

Or to KBW

Tremont and Javonte are going to have so much fun throwing dimes to these guys above the rim.

Alleva/TAF better give him whatever upgrades he wants right now. If they don't have the money right now, there are plenty of big boosters and even everyday fans willing to shell out some cash to make it happen.

Completely agree with you. As I mentioned in my response to South above, Wade is always looking for ways to improve or adapt without giving any excuses for not doing so.

As an example, he could have easily said after this past season that he just did not have the roster to execute what he wanted to do and therefore he is not changing anything and that this season would simply be better due to having better talent. And I think most realistic fans would have likely agreed with it. Instead, he still tried to adapt during the season to maximize the roster he had and learned lessons from it on what areas they need to improve on next year from a schematic and program development standpoint.
