Nick Saban never lost or tied fewer than three games in his first three seasons at LSU, and he lost to Alabama... Birmingham.

Arsparger was absolutely a great defensive coach. Every coaching staff he was a part of fielded great defenses. You should look up Miami Dolphins "No Name" defense and undefeated season. As for his record at LSU, he did very well with the talent that he had, and played Tom Osborne's Nebraska twice in bowl games, and very good Baylor team coached by Grant Teaff in the other bowl appearance.

1) Saban is revered because he stayed long enough to win it all. If he left after those three years we would be "meh...thanks?"

2)I Yes the Dolphins were amazing. John Chavis won a NC at Tennessee as DC, do you want him as a head coach. Different job.

3) Tom Osborne beat him twice. Barry Switzer was great because he beat Osborne.

4) Grant Teaff was a great guy who did more with less. Would you have been ok with losing to TCU a couple of years back? Same thing.

777TIGER, YOU NAILED IT. Stovall was a great recruiter, some believe he was fired 1 year early and didn't get to benefit from his recruiting. In 84 Arnsparger became HC and he was what LSU needed at the time ,discipline, he coached for 3 years 26-8-2 record, 13-3-2 in the SEC. In 87 ARCHER became Head Coach and went 10-1-1 with the LAST YEAR OF THE STOVALL RECRUITS. It was all down hill from here. Arnsparger and Archer were part of a great Coaching staff but they sure wasn't known for their recruiting.

I couldn't find this game uploaded on YouTube. I remember watching the last minute or so on a TV at Cortana Mall and saw the kicker miss the kick for the win and see Arnsparger get ticked off. I'd love to see the whole game for the first time. A tie at Florida against a good Florida team in his first game as HC was a good sign.

what if arnsparger coached here for a decade or more? pretty sure we're getting a natty out of that at some point. one of the greatest defensive minds ever.

There were a lot of Arnsbarger stories going around...his feud with Broadhead being the biggest... but after his 3 years at LSU, I think he was burned out as a coach and looking for another challenge. Bottom line Bob just made his decision easier. He coached that whole last season with the Florida AD's job in his back pocket. Another reason to hate the Gators.

Sure would have liked to see what LSU might have done had Arnsparger stayed for ten years or so.

arnsbarger was old and tired. he wanted an AD job and to leave the stress of coaching. he only left us because we wouldn't give him the AD job and Florida did. he wasn't a very good AD for them and he would not have been for LSU.
