1) Les Miles is NOT leaving or getting canned after this year regardless, so let's just all deal with realities here.

2) Les MUST replace those two DCs with a top notch DC, one who actually coaches hands on with the Defense, if he has any hope at all of righting this ship, retaining his recruits, and keeping this ball rolling. If not, then you can start the countdown to his demise, and then if we are fortunate enough, getting another Nick Saban of sorts to come in here and lock up the state again, and bring LSU back to where it belongs. If not, then buckle up for the rollercoaster. This is the fork in the road for Les Miles though. He's at the point right now where he's got the opportunity to illustrate his competance as the head man. Everyone is capable of making mistakes and even getting in a ditch you feel you can't escape from, and every time you struggle you get more bogged down. However, this is now his time to prove he's an overcomer and not a hard head ego maniac that has to prove it's his way or the hwy, and he's going to live and die with his committments. That doesn't win football games. We've seen it all too often in football, and at LSU in the past.

3) JJ must be worked with heavily in the off season by a QB coach to quicken his delivery, and to make quicker decisions, as well as how to read defensive packages. He's got raw talent galore, but he's still not ready for prime time just yet. Lee needs to seek counseling on how to deal with those game jitters and nerves that causes him to freak out, and also worked with in not staring down his receivers, of which JJ seems to be much better at avoiding. Hatch just needs to get better physically, and work on getting more proficient and poised in the pocket.

I'm not counting on anything. I remember when the two words were Josh Booty, the LSU savior, and we saw how that turned out. I hope so, but not counting on it.

LSU will bounce back with a 9 or 10 win season.

We are losing a good group of talent. Not too sure about that for next year. I'm just keeping my expectations at a reasonable level for next year, and planning on the year after that for a run. I think if Les makes the changes he needs to make, dumps these DCs, goes out and gets an aggressive Defensive coach who coaches his players to attack and play smart, not all this soft zone crap, and works with the Offensive line in blocking, gets the QBs to improve, and most importantly eliminates all these undisciplined mistakes leading to ridiculous penalties, we can go 8-9 wins on the year and if we play the losses close, and are competitive I will be happy.

Quarterback experience will be the difference next season.

Perhaps, but if teams continue to pass on us at will, and we keep arm tackling people, being out of position, looking confused and discombobulated on defense then we will not be able to put our young offense in a position to win. That's one thing we have had in the recent past which has kept us in games, a stellar defense, and you didn't have that this year. LSU scored enough points to win or put us in a position to win most all our games, save Ole Miss, but our Defense has really let us down, surrendering more points that I can ever remember our defense giving up in a really long time, more so our Defensive coaching which has caused all these blank looks on the faces of our players.

Good post Mike. I hope you are right and agree that if Les dumps the DCs and gets a proven guy, we will probably stay on track. I am worried that he is too stubborn to make the move and if so, here comes the roller coaster you referred to.

Yeah, I think that's the concern of us all, the old Gerry Dinardo syndrome that takes over many coaches decision making. I am hoping that Les knows this, and isn't so stuck in his ways that he can't adjust his thinking and make the best moves for LSU, because in the end no one person is bigger than LSU. You might be given the rope, but it's your choice to either pull yourself out the hole or hang yourself with it.

Great post and I agree. However, who will this defense savior be??? And will he be willing to come here??? I think LSU fans all to often think and expect that every person out there is just dying to be an LSU coach - I personally don't think so. This perfect individual may be out there, but can LSU get him here??? Getting him here may be as big a problem as finding him in the first place.

Jimbo didn't stay around long, Muschamp couldn't be hired back, Dunbar didn't stay, now there are rumors about friction with Crowton. I'm beginning to have concerns that any worthy young coach would be wary about joining a Miles staff.

if tackling and coverage skills don't improve, Joe Montana wouldn't be able to make enough of a difference...

I think being only one year removed from a NC will still be a huge draw, and I think there are some real good defensive minded coaches out there that would jump at the chance to make their mark, if for no other reason that the advancement that coaching at LSU has given people like Jimbo, Muschamp, Reese, Pelini, and others. Where a stepping stone might appear to be a negative because of what happened with the departure of Pelini this year, it's also a big draw in the coaching profession to guys wanting to make their mark in the world.

I'm with you 100% on this one. I thought LSU needed someone with talent and experience at developing QBs back when we had JaMarcus.

Polish those throwing mechanics, footwork and decision-making process.

I agree with you. Only problem is, a lot of kids back out of their commitment when the coaches that recruited them leave, and this includes Sheppard and Loston.
