re: Offensive breakdown from 2005-2012 and 3 questions

We lost 4 players to the first round(3 of them on offense)of the NFL draft before we won the national championship in 2007. The offense carried the defense for much of the year because as nasty as Pelini's D was, he gave up a ton of points. In both the losses, his defense gave up over 40 points. I can't remember the last time Chavis' D gave up that many points. It's funny how much the offensive dynamics change when switching from Flynn/Perrilloux to Lee/Jefferson.

I agree. My main point is that we never really had a great offensive scheme. We just had players who could make even my play calling look good. Then in 2008 we had a redshirt freshmen take over at QB and I think that we greatly underestimate the NFL caliber (sometimes all-pro) secondaries he was throwing against. Then in 2009 JJ took over and while he had the tools he looked like a child learning how to play the position for the first time that year. I suspect that CLM had him under strict rules to never attempt a pass unless it was wide open as well.
That and I began to notice the questionable play calling in 2008. In spite of the talent at running back, we would often line up in no-back formations on 1st and 2nd down. Then you had the horrible option play in 2009. (I don't care what anyone says, that couldn't have looked good in practice) Then we went fully insane with the zone read that turned us into a scrambling offense wasting the abilities of the RB's and receivers we still had through 2010.
In 2012 we had some very good wide receivers and great RB's but we made OBJ our primary receiver early and we kept throwing to him even though he got off to a bad start. That and the most vanilla offense you could imagine through the Florida game.

Mett didn't have to throw to OBJ. He just did because he had the habit of locking on his favorite targets. He missed a lot of open targets and when he was on, the o-line couldn't block. Everything that could've went wrong did go wrong. It's just one of those years.

quote:I really hate it when people go after our o-line. I've seen a lot of QB's at the D-1 level do well with a lot less time to throw the ball. It seems like people talk if the time to throw is anything less than 5 seconds then our o-line stinks.
and when he was on, the o-line couldn't block
I also think they could do a lot better if they didn't have to play 4 quarters against the scrub teams on our schedule. Last year we ran right into teams in our 1st 5 games. That's fine for the rb's as we had a bunch of them, but our o-line was too thin for that nonsense.

If you think our o-line played up to snuff throughout the entire season, then it's not worth my time discussing this with you. That one DL from Clemson ate Vadal Alexander's lunch pretty much the entire game. That wasn't the first time the youth of the o-line was exposed. Didn't help that Mett played like a statue either and there was no underneath throw. I can't wait for Cameron to develop that part of the game. Man do I miss RB screens.

I guess I have a soft spot for the thankless job that o-lines do. I would hope that if a particular lineman is caught in a bad matchup that the staff would do the best they could to help him out or switch things up.

I guess most of u did not serve in the military in time of war. When we win it s because of Les's genius, but when we lose it is the DC or the players fault. Les is the CAPITAN OF THE SHIP, he should be responsible for the result. It would be nice for Les to man up when he calls a terrible offense game!

These stats arent good enough. Youd actuakly have to factor in pass attempts and sacks. We threw it way more this year.
Yes we did, very glad to see. Been discussed why the passing game wasn't more effective in 2012 but it was good to see the attempt, pretty much every game. I can't imagine this not being tried again in 2013. Hopefully with a more experienced QB, better OL play, and WR's better at catching the ball, the O, especially the passing O, will be much improved in 2013.
