FYI, they stopped doing that about halfway through the season last year and didn't do it during the spring.

Also, I think many people assumed that a lot of the cause of our problems was the "check with me" calls, but in hindsight, it was the OL. We didn't really get much better after changing that philosophy.

In our case it was to remedy the fact we had inexperienced QBs. The D was looked at from upstairs and calls came in from sideline. It didn't work for long after we were baited into plays by D formations. Besides some obvious personnel pkgs, this made the O very predictable.
Meerkat isn't uncommon in football, but not used so extensively as what LSU did in first 5 games.

Can't really answer for other programs compared to LSU. It's pretty common knowledge you can't rely on it heavily unless you really outclass competition, when it really isn't needed. Eg 2nd half vs gumps we knew which gaps were being run at and couldn't do much to stop it.
