I don't think that the issue raised by the OP is a condemnation of the desire to win. I think that everyone prefers that his or her teams win sporting events.

What is at issue is the utter depression and fury demonstrated by many who seem to take a loss as if they, personally, have been laid bare to the whole world and humiliated as a result.

If you don't care whether you win or lose, why even watch? Why join a message board?

It is dependent on how each individual relates and identifies with a team. It is an escape from reality for some. Gives others something to chat about. Many do get emotional. Some go off the deep end, but they were probably on the edge anyway.

Basically no one should base their self worth on something they have zero control of. It is entertainment and a ball game.

It is much more fun to win than lose, but in the end, if the Tigers are great, average, or awful, it has little effect on our individual situations in life, except as fans. Pride, bragging rights, etc. for "our" team.

an obsession to win when you can do nothing to affect the results is an interesting phenomenon.

You may not be able to effect the results of an individual game, but over the long term you sure as hell can. Keep the pressure on the coaches and players to win. Make sure they understand that this is not acceptable. And if they loss too much then can there arse and get someone who will do the job. The fans do play a part in this.

You are using depression and severe disappointment synonymously.

The way recruiting is followed and greater media access to the teams creating greater anticipation to see those recruiting rankings and offseason quotes come to fruition.

"DJ Welter is much improved"
"The best offensive line ever during my time here"
"Maybe the best recruiting class ever at LSU"

People at least expect to see a team compete with this much talent year after year.

Ah, Shut it.

When the US military forces helped win either world war or the revolutionary war, do you say "Awesome, the US. military forces won the war!" No, you say "WE" won the war.

"We" can be used in cases of belonging or support. Especially if you're an alumni of the school.

There's nothing more to life than winning. Competition=survival. You'll learn once you're out of college.

winners are driven by the obsession to win. it doesnt matter if its checkers, a coin toss, a game, ect. you are representative of the problem with this country. Everyone doesnt get a trophy and everybody doesnt win.

You're showing exactly what is wrong with our current global consciousness. We were all born on earth and are spirits in the material world. Dominating to win is an illusion that never brings satisfaction. Playing to win a game? Absolutely. Being consumed by winning? Not good for anyone.

This guy gets it ^

What I'm saying is, if you get angry, resentful, sad, or depressed over a ball game, it speaks volumes about how you handle adversity in your personal life.

If you enjoy the pain that this attitude brings to you, then fine. I was that type of fan for a long time, and can still get caught up in it every now and then, but I don't let it interfere with my peace.

We were all born into this insane, so called world, voluntarily, because of our desire to be separate, different, to have our own individual identity. So it's a dog eat dog mentality, I win, you lose, I have more than you, I'm better than you. I want what I want, when I want it, and I will step all over you to get it. Oh someone was murdered? Raped? Well as long as it's not me, or my family, I'm sorry it had to happen to them, but better them than me right?

Lol, We are in for such a surprise!

It's a game, the fun I get out of it today is to see the skill on the field, great runs, great passes, great catches, and great tackles. If we happen to win, great, if not, great.
