why do they keep doing this. Are CF games really that long to where they need to keep speeding them up.

Television networks keep meddling with the rules of the game, and it has gone too far. TV networks (including ESPN) are so starved for quality content (see, in this regard, women's trick pool shot competitions) that the content provider (in this case, the NCAA and it member schools and conferences) should have the upper hand, money notwithstanding. It's time for them to grow some testicles and push back.

The clock will stop on out of bounds play. It will restart when marked for play instead of on the snap.

If they cut down on the number of commercials and just charged more for the ones that had then the game would be crazy like a fox faster.

Not at all. ESPN loves ESPN. ESPN is all about ESPN. Sports are simply the candy that they toss out there in order to sell what they're selling. ESPN has done more damage to sports in the U.S. than all the drug and cheating scandals combined.

Sure, but that would reduce the amount of money they make, which means less dollars for schools. This is all about money and schools are dependent on TV money to survive.

Give me a break. You wouldn't see half of the sporting events you see if it wasn't for ESPN.

Guess what? It's not just ESPN. CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox all have contracts with the NCAA. And, the NCAA makes so much money off of these deals that they are just as much to blame as the networks.

Largely, but not entirely

It certainly matters, but, like the crack addict, the schools convince themselves that even a small cut in the supply (which I'm not convinced would occur, given how hungry the networks are for something decent to put on the air) can't be tolerated.

At least half the sporting events on ESPN are total garbage. See, in this regard, lumberjack competitions.
And I agree, it isn't just ESPN (which, of course, is the same company as ABC). It's all of them, ESPN just makes "sports" (as they define it) their primary content. Indeed, with all the competition for content to air, the NCAA could and should take the longer view, stand up to the networks in terms of number of commercial minutes, and, though in the short run they might not get the raise in their fees for the nexxt contract they would otherwise get, in the longer run they will make out fine, and the integrity of the sport will be better protected.

I remember Cowherd reporting a while back that college football games only average a minute longer than they did 3 years ago.

They play lumberjack competitions during down times when theres nothing else to play or they can't get certain events because of Network Contracts. You may not have seen any Super Regional Play or the CWS if it wasn't for ESPN. I was able to see the college wrestling NC a few years back, which I udoubtedly wouldn't have been able to see somewhere else.
You have the choice not to watch ESPN when they play the Lumberjack competitions, but the bottom line is, sometimes thats even better then what is on other channels.

What money does the NCAA get from the SEC's TV contract?

I'm not really sure how exactly the revenue sharing goes. But its not just ESPN or the networks fault. The Universities gain just as much from these deals as anyone else does.....

It's because TV networks go to a commercial break every chance they get, which makes the games much longer. And since cutting back on commercials is not an option, these greedy fricks need to change the rules of the game.

Not to call Cowherd a liar, but given where his interests lie, I'd want some independent verification of that "statistic," as well as an examination of all the underlying data, such as how much they have shortened the halftime break, if at all. There is no doubt that they are running more commercials, and that the pressure to make changes like the OB rule is coming from the networks in order to replace "dead" field time (from their point of view) with advertising time.

The statement made by the original poster is incorrect. See post by "Just Smokin" , above, for the fact of the matter.
