Well - really it was "The Swampers", but Ronnie Van Zant's pronunciation of the word kind of got lazy at the end - sounding very much like he's saying "The Swampies" (you know, "...and they've been known to pick a song or two"). It is another way to refer to the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section - a group of white session musicians who sounded black (they played the music behind The Staple Sisters classic, "I'll take you there.", along with hundreds of other tracks by dozens of artists, including Paul Simon, The Allman Brothers, etc.)
