NCAA Infield Fly Rule Question

Runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs. Batter attempts bunt and pops it up to 3rd base. Umpire makes no signal and 3rd baseman drops ball, apparently intentionally, then picks up ball and runs to successfully tag third. What’s the call?

Runners advance and batter out apparently as that’s how it was called in the Arkansas game

Auburn does not look like #15

do you mean that he caught the ball and then dropped it or that he failed to catch the ball alltogether?

I’m still scratching my head as to how/why runners were advanced.

Touched his glove but not a catch then drop.

Yeah I did not understand but apparently the coach bought the explanation because he did not really raise a stink

He deliberately let it drop after getting under it—popped up bunt. Then ran and touched third for force out. Late on throw to second runner safe. Third base ump calls batter out and let’s runners advance to third and second.

If I’m not mistaken, the rule states pop up on infield, not a bunt or line drive.

A bunt can never be an infield fly.

Which only adds to my confusion.

Even on infield fly the runners aren’t awarded the next base they stay on their current. I wonder wtf they ruled to give them the next base

Yup, but somehow the ump managed to quickly convince the Auburn coach, as scottfruget indicated. I think they just screwed it up.

If infield fly rule was called batter is out but if fielder drops the ball runners can advance at there own risk thats the rule in high school i think.

But im thinking an infield fly rule cant be called on a bunt and if so they screwed up.

I think it’s actually not an infield fly cause it wasn’t high enough. However, it is against the rules to intentionally drop something after letting it hit your glove. It’s akin to throwing your glove at a line drive. Base awards are given according to the rule book.

In order for infield fly rule to be in effect it has to be a routine pop up and it does not have to be in the infield you can call infield fly rule on a mile high pop out to shallow left

OK, this must have been the call. Never equated it to throwing the glove type call.

No IF fly rule on bunt. Batter is out if ball is intentionally dropped by the fielder. Once the batter is out it removes the force play and runners advancing must be tagged. Neither runner was tagged so they both move up.

Could they have ruled that because it was an infield fly, the runners were not forced? Didn't see the play but it sounds like they touched the base and not the runners. I could see the umps saying batter out on infield fly, and the runners advanced safely because they were not tagged and were not forced.
