This seems silly, but it's a big risk to go straight to the draft. Most of these guys fail, and when you do and you didn't have a degree to fall back on, you might end up a 27 year old high school graduate with a large gap in relevant work history.
If I had a son and they offer him 8 million dollars, I think you have to take it.
But, otherwise there is still a lot of security in a college degree. Even if you want to work in and around baseball, connection to a high profile program can be a big help.
I am not saying most of our HS guys drafted won't go, because trust me they're going.
But it is a risk.

If you gave me a million dollar head start in my younger 20s when my baseball career didn't pan out, I think I could figure how to make college happen if I thought that was going to be an issue in getting a job. Very very few players are journeymen minor league players into their late 20s. They either have made the majors previously and have been sent back down at that age, they're college players who got a degree, or they were released long before 27 years old. That's just not a legit risk that should be considered. The kids who sign out of high school, sign for a whole bunch of money they wouldn't be making from 18-21 regardless. If it doesn't work out, they're plenty young enough for it not to matter

Vast majority of them aren't making a million. They are getting a one time signing bonus (taxable) and then making 20k a year.
I am not saying it's a bad place for the average 18 year old. But there is a lot of security that comes with college that these guys lose out on.

the majority of kids signing out of high school in the new NIL world are getting at least half a million now. They'll find out in their early 20s if their baseball career still has legs. That's not too old to figure out your next step in life. And if they burned through $500k in a few years, then that's on them for being stupid.

Watching moneyball, Billy bean had to decide money or Stanford. I remember his parents asking and when he signed.
Regardless of how much you get, you can always save it towards school.

Or they become a punter at LSU.
