Why?

Well, I said "why" - you were apparently further from my thinking than I estimated (and my failure, not yours, I'm sorry).

I agree with a portion of your statement - Miles inherited a program that was one season removed from a BCS-CG, but was not a perennially a Top 5 program, while Coker inherited a Miami program that for nearly two decades was expected to win or compete for a national championship, of whatever flavor.

I think that LSU was at (albeit briefly) the level of Miami(FL), maybe not as entrenched. Your post has me re-evaluating that, as Miles' success in having three consecutive top 5 finishes may have skewed my thinking. Miles has contributed as much or more to LSU's legacy as a dominant program as his predecessor, and that wasn't really the case with Coker, a point which you make well (though I feel obligated to continue point out for the rantards that Coker went 60-15 at Miami, won a BCS and three conference championships, never had a losing season and they fired him - that sets an impossibly high bar for anyone who follows).

Mile and Coker: Miles destroyed Coker's Miami with second string QB in the Peach Bowl 40-3--end of comparision.

why does this comparison keep being made?

They both inherited talented teams, won a championship, and seemingly played to the level of the competition/underachieved for the level of talent assembled.

I have been critical of Miles for all the reasons Big Herm exposed in the Advocate Article from earlier this week. Attitude, preparation, and leadership are seeds planted, fertilized and watered by the coaching staff. As the team prepares for the 13th game of the season and we hear that coaches are beginning to become vocal and players are now hustling between plays and drills is really disappointing.

One can call this season and anomaly or a foreshadowing. I hope it is an anomaly and with a new coaching staff comes a new attitude. My gut tells me it is a foreshadowing and there may be other comparisons coming out of the Peach Bowl...

Miles is a very good coach IMO. So he had a down year. Name a coach that never had a down year?

As long he keps recruiting well and keeps/hires good assistants we'll in the hunt for a NC. We know he can win a BCS championship as long as he has the talent (ex. 2007). Does it really matter who recruited the talent - Saban or Miles? The "winning with Saban's players" crap is nothing more than bull$hit from the gumps, and sadly some LSU fans are buying into this crap.

A losing in conference record seems to be the barometer. Of Miles' peers (those who have won a national championship), he is joined by Bowden, Fulmer and Coker who all had at least one losing in conference record, post championship. Mack Brown, Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, and Jim Tressel have not produced a similar result.

So why is this the metric of choice?

If Miles gets it right with the defensive staff then he has a chance to be part of a true 21st Century dynasty.

And if not, he'll become Coker2.

That looks like a fricking Pro-Bowl roster.

If Miles was a Coker, it would have been exposed at OSU. LSU wasn't his first gig, like Miami was for Coker.
