im not sure i like trent not releasing him. i dont know the details but it would seem to be the better move pr wise to just let the kid go.
I dont think we have to worry about him going to an sec school

i've heard he was a problem from the get go. it sucks we wasted 2 scholarships on him and eddie.

They were taking up 2 roster spots from all the other guys beating down the door to play at LSU

i know. i was ready to suit up for the squad. TJ could've used my outside jumper.

LSU could have pursued Markel Brown, Brian Williams, or Langston Galloway. I don't think that Galloway would come regardless, but it's tough to predict.

None of those players would have made a difference last year. Depending on John Isaac, we may not need them for this year.

Would they have made a difference this year as opposed to Derenbecker who clearly won't?

It depends on Isaac.
People always bring up those three players. But when we were recruiting them, we signed Turner and had Isaac committed. How many shooting guards should we have signed? I don't see how MD would have changed that either way.

I am with you, while Derenbecker was a legit prospect for LSU. We had Turner and MD, and those seemed like fine choices. Now we know that MD was pretty useless off the court and only contributed one year. Ludwig was brought in pretty much to improve chances with Derenbecker as far as I can see. Since he was such a flop, I am second-guessing that decision, but it's obviously second-guessing after the fact.

Let me tell you this, I've seen Derenbecker play, and I have played against Issac and watched him play several years after I graduated, Issac is probably the more athletic of the two, but Derenbecker is better basketball player.

I don't doubt it. He may be the best of the entire group, but it seems clear he will never be playing for LSU again.

Also, Issac has struggled with his knee as well, I'm really not sure that his knee will hold up to the speed of SEC.

Maybe it would be a better idea to get TJ a coaching application at Country Day.

Langston Galloway would of made a difference. He was on the all conference time the first PG to do it at that school since Jamir Nelson. and he's only shooting better than 35% from three point range.

He was that, in a year there was really no talent in the state. He was and always will be too slow to play in the SEC except for a role type player, he would have been a descent player off the bench in his junior or senior season. We never even offered the Langston Galloway who was the freshman of the year in his conference. This situation in our program is truly embarassing. I stated when we fired Brady it would set the program back five years. It looks like we will be set back six or seven years, cause TJ was and never will be the right guy for this job. LSU firing him the way they did was terrible and KARMA is hell. It's not like we had some super star coach waiting in the wings to take over the program. TJ's has written the script for how to destroy a program that was in the Final Four 5 years ago and won the SEC 3 years ago. He should have been fired last year, cause winning 5 games in the conference is horrendous. I can remember TJ saying "kids do not leave my program", well he has lost more kids than Brady at this point. How anyone can still defend this guy is probably still defending Obama. Both guys are jokes and have no idea how fix it. How can you blame Aleva at this point, TJ is the head coach not Aleva

In reading the comments from his father, it sounds to me like substance abuse or some kind of clinical depression.
There is a LOT of money at Country Day. Where there are rich kids, there are substance abuse problems.
I need to qualify this by saying I have no firsthand knowledge of Derenbecker's situation, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised to hear of a kid at Country Day having a substance abuse problem.
Kudos to TJ for playing the hard line with this kid. If this is what it appears to be, he shouldn't grant the release.

How? This seems to be the doing of Derenbecker and his family.

If the kids family thinks he needs a different environment to excel academically there's no good reason to prevent him from doing that.
