Freshman Landon Marceaux gets the starting nod tomorrow night against Stony Brook.

Me either.
The only thing I was sure of was that Marceaux was starting Saturday.
Haha. Welp.

Well you weren’t sure about anything then

Not a fan of this move.
Seems like Walker would be a better choice to start against the 4 seed. We will see how this pays off.

I don't know why everyone is so upset. IMO at this point no one is a clear ace. It's not like we are starting Lange on Friday of a regional.
Marceaux has looked better recently, but maybe Henry looks back to form in practice and the plan is to throw him Saturday. Or maybe Paul wants to save a more experienced pitcher like Walker for a potential elimination game.
Whatever the reason, it's not crazy to throw marceaux Friday. He is not a clear cut ace.

I posted the starter way before you even thought about it. Going on a few weeks now. So def wasn’t a sure thing.

Until Henry gets stretched and gets consistent, Marceaux is clearly our ace. He has been outstanding three starts in a row.
I rarely question Mainieri, who forgot more baseball than I ever learned, but this is a head scratcher. He must know something we don’t. Maybe Arizona State can’t hit fastballs less than 86 mph.

Marceaux has ace stuff and CLEARLY has pitched more like an ace recently than Walker has. I really can't believe this is up for argument in anyone's mind.
It has always been common sense to use your least effective starter against your weakest opponent in a regional. It's not that it's fool proof, and that you are guaranteed to reap the benefits. But it's the most logical move to set yourself up for the rest of the weekend.
If LSU shows up and plays the way they should against a much weaker Stony Brook team than the last one that came through here, then it shouldn't take a great pitching performance to win. A potential matchup with ASU is not one I like for Walker, and while anyone can have a bad day, there is a much stronger chance that Walker bombs than Marceaux or Henry will. At least with Henry, he still has to be stretched out, so I thought he would be the other option if we weren't going with Walker in game one.
Using Marceaux against the weakest team in the regional feels like a waste.

Keyword recently. He is CLEARLY not an ace like Lange/Gausman/Nola. Yet. He has no experience in the post season either.
I say all this from the perspective of believeing he has the most upside right now and I agree he is pitching the best. But to act like he is a guaranteed commodity and ace is just flat out wrong. Henry was our best pitcher until he got hurt. Now Henry is back.
It's not a crazy decision to throw marceaux tonight. If we were talking about Lange or Nola I would agree.

3 good performances is all you need to be an ace?
I think he has ace potential but to say he's a proven commodity based on 3 starts is silly. For the record I would start Walker. I just don't think mainieri deserves any flak for this

Wrong. The last 7 years we’ve been throwing our number 2 in game 1. And for y’all who disagree with that... well, y’all just don’t know how to use a rotation. Marceaux throwing tonight is telling me he’s our number 2. So.. apparently Henry has shown in practice that he’s where he needs to be.

You aren't even arguing with me from an honest angle. Your whole point just now was to tell me, in so many words, that I shouldn't consider Marceaux a guarantee. I SPECIFICALLY stated that he WASN'T a guarantee.
Remember this? "It's not that it's fool proof, and that you are guaranteed to reap the benefits. But it's the most logical move to set yourself up for the rest of the weekend."
I mean, c'mon man? How can I take you seriously if you're going to accuse me of guaranteeing something when, in fact, I did the exact opposite?
Marceaux has every bit the pedigree to be an ace like the three you mentioned. He wasn't healthy all year. Now he is. And, aside from all of that, why do we have to make the standard "you must be Lange, Gausman or Nola to be an ace"? Guess what? Those guys aren't here. I don't care about Walker's experience. What did that do for him against South Carolina, when we knew we had to win that game to stay alive for a regional host?
Lange had no postseason experience in his freshman season, and yet he started the marble game over Poche. Why? Because he was better. And that worked out just fine. That's why I want my best starters available for games 2 and 3. You go with your best. Nothing is a guarantee. You think Walker is a guarantee? This isn't rocket science we're talking about.
