Wouldn't say Schimpf is actually killing it in High A ball. He is batting .267 for the season. Here is a link to his stat page: Ryan Schimpf MLB Stats for 2012 season

no one cares about average these days

OPS is 828

that is above average for a 2B

only 2 MLB 2B have a higher one than that

killing it in A ball. He has 28 2Bs, 3 3Bs, and 13 HRs, .837 OPS. He was an all-star this year. I'd be shocked if he didn't play AA ball next year.

Still got a couple years to wait till getting a spring training chance?

true but this is a guy who is 24yo in A ball right now.

Age 21 season he is pretty much in the short-season Aball league where he put up decent #s, .287/.369/.426 in 129 ABs. Those stats were good for about 4th best OPS on team. Average age on his team was about 21, so he was with his peers, although of course some of those guys would be players who had been in pro ball since age 18.

Age 22 season it looks that he starts in low A ball where he hit .240/.332/.421. Decent extra base power and decent # of walks in 337ABs, but those offensive #s put him in the lower to middle of the pack on his own team. That same year he gets 18 games in high A ball and puts up pretty bad #s.

Age 23 season he is in high A ball, plays 57g with 228 PAs and goes .240/.333/.459. So extremely similar to his stats in low A the year before. Had some sort of injury issue i believe.

Now he is back in high A ball, at age 24. But now he is an older guy in that league (his 3rd year seeing it, plus no other guys who appear to have been regulars all season are older than him-one other 24yo and all the rest younger).

Anyway probably no reason to get very excited about him

no reason to get overly excited, but Ochinko, who has spent the same amount of time in the minors as Schimpf, just got called up to AA this year mid season. There's also guys like Ryan Verdugo who spent 3 years in A ball and made his MLB debut this season. It's not like you can completely write off Schimpf as being nothing more than a career minor league journeyman because he's still in A ball in year 3. Charlie Furnush as well spent 3 years in A ball before getting promoted and finally getting the call up last season. ryan theriot, who has been in the majors for awhile now, actually got demoted back to A ball in his 3rd year of professional baseball and didn't make it to AAA until 2006 after starting his career in 2001.
