I used to have an LSU pennant as a kid with the coolest script of the words "Fighting Tigers". Should have held on to it.

Ok...well, why does it bother anyone that we MAY SOMETIMES be addressed as Louisiana State?

Yes. However, I cannot think of many schools that would even have this conversation.
99% of schools are either an acronym or the full name, but rarely both. For that matter, there are hardly any major universites that are ever referred to by their acronym. As far as a schools that are commonly referred to by their acronym, these are the ones of which I can think :
UCLA, USC, NC State (Hybrid), UConn (Hybrid), USF, UCF, BYU, UAB, ECU, UTEP, SMU, TCU, UNC, FAU, and LSU
Out of those schools, I think the only ones that are realistically referred to by some version of their full name are USC (Southern Cal), UNC (North Carolina), and LSU (Louisiana State or Louisiana State University).
IMO, "Louisiana State", "LSU", are all equally appealing "Louisiana State University", and if ANYTHING, I think "Louisiana State" sounds best. As long as Verne does not start calling us Louisiana A&M...
