LSU needs to go heavy on safeties and CBs in the off season. That appears to be a weakness of 2023.

What's the DB situation for next season, I know Harris and Alexander are coming in, Raydar, JDR and maybe DD are leaving. I think Banks is returning because he was hurt all year. I guess my question is who still has eligibility that's returning vs who's going into the draft

Horizontal stripes, not complimentary for the CBK body type.

I read the other day, I think it was here, that JDR may not be going anywhere after all.

Greg Brooks and Major Burns coming back is absolutely huge. Have played a lot and are both considered big-time leaders at the back of the defense. Brooks is a helluva playmaker, too.

Those 2 coming back plus Brooks’ ability to play either safety or nickel is going to help a lot. As long as we stay relatively healthy, there should be enough numbers at CB to find the right combo. Probably need to add a portal guy or 2 if the right
one(s) are available for depth and competition, but knowing you can pencil in Brooks and Burns as 2/5 of your DB starters is huge.

It’d be great if Banks could give us something, but I don’t think you can count on him. I don’t mean that in a bad way—he’s had terrible luck with injuries—just that you recruit to your DB roster numbers expecting him not to play. And anything he winds up giving you is lagniappe.

Btw, kudos to Jay Ward for playing yesterday. Pretty sure he’s the only one who declared for the draft that stuck around and played. Not a shot at the ones who didn’t, but having him in the backfield helped the defense dominate despite having almost no experienced depth on the DL. And he stayed healthy and got to put another good game on film for the scouts.

Based on the current roster right now, I would guess it looks like Burns and Brooks at Safety, Alexander and Harris at corner, and Sage Ryan at the nickel.

Obviously still have Welch and Allen plus all the new freshman who could earn a spot, but that is by far your most experienced secondary. And honestly, I think that secondary is talented enough to compete, but it is razor thin and lacks experienced depth.
