Here is the lsumatt poll
1 {'LSU';} 10-1 1.19
2 {'OSU';} 10-1 1.075
3 {'Alabama';} 9-1 1.072
4 {'Arkansas';} 9-1 1.031
5 {'Kansas St';} 8-2 0.995
6 {'Houston';} 10-0 0.989
7 {'Stanford';} 10-1 0.962
8 {'Oklahoma';} 8-2 0.961
9 {'Boise St';} 9-1 0.946
10 {'Va Tech';} 9-1 0.939
Most of those teams have played 11 games at this point. LSU is 11-0. Bama is 10-1. Am I missing something?

You have four teams with rankings above 1. How is that possible?

I need to look into that. The numbers and rankings look right, just not the records

That was discussed. Nothing keeps teams bounded necessarily between 0 and 1.

Simplified for math challenged idiots like me:
((L+T=11W0L)= 1BCS)+ 3W = BCSNC
L=Les Miles
T=Talent
W=Wins
L=Losses
BCS=Standing
BCSNC=Champions
((L+T=11W0L)= 1BCS)+ 3W = BCSNC
L=Les Miles
T=Talent
W=Wins
L=Losses
BCS=Standing
BCSNC=Champions

I just made a typo for LSU when pasting in. It is right now.
I think records reflect wins over FBS schools.

lsumatt has single-handedly raised the collective iq for us with one post. freaking amazing

quote:Maybe I can help. I have a lot of time these days. Tell me what you need. (I have a minor in math with a master's degree in computer science.)
If I had time, I think it would be neat to get a bunch of historical data and choose a value that matches the curve.
On a side note, have you tried to come up with a better strength of schedule formula than the one that's used by the BCS? I believe it's the same formula that was created in the 1940's. Maybe earlier.
I was working on one that also takes into account the current rankings, not just win/loss record.
(2OR + OOR)/3 just doesn't cut it for me.

That SOS formula may be reported on websites as a gauge but it isn't used by any computers and isn't used for the BCS at all. SOS is inherently built in to the computer polls (mine included) and is too difficult to call "a formula" because it depends on all 120 teams in a complicated way.

that would be awesome. the way SOS are calculated now i dont think tells the whole picture. Its easier to win a championship playing 12X west virginia than 2 Bama and a Oregon on a schedule.

Matt, I am working on a project that entails some statistics that are just over the heads of all involved...do you do any consulting work?....

Something similar was used prior to 2004, but no longer.

Just curious, Matt- What do you do for a living?

You stated your scale is 1 to 0. Is it not?

Since it's your own personal poll you should know what it reflects. And what good is a poll that picks and chooses which teams should be stricken from the record?

The nominal scale is 0 to 1.0. Your 1-1 record starts off with a loss to a 1.0 rating team. But nothing says a team can't be higher than 1.0.

All games and teams are included as the explanation clearly states. I simply reported the record against FBS schools.
