It almost worked in 2024 (though LSU didn't "punt" in its final series of the regular season).

LSU was the 11 seed in the 24 SEC Tournament. They went with Jump in game 1, which they won, then Holman in game 2, which they also won, both on "short" rest. IIRC, Kentucky went with a midweek guy in game 2 instead of one of their weekend guys. Arkansas (the 2 seed) did the same thing and lost to 10 seed South Carolina. That allowed LSU to play South Carolina 2x en route to the Championship game...which they only lost to Tenn by a run.

Things are a bit different now with the top 4 seeds getting double byes. But just last year A&M was essentially in LSU's shoes and only lost by 1 (to LSU and Anderson) in the quarterfinals.

running the SEC tournament is next to impossible

For this team, yeah. But it’s not completely impossible.

only small scenario is if LSU played some teams that don't have anything to play

Well, yeah. It’s why middle of the pack teams win it so often. LSU has been the only top team that has won it pretty consistently over the last couple of decades. Winning it simply the sake of winning it itself. But with the expanded SEC and so many more teams spending enough money to make them competitive, an SECT championship has lost a lot of its inherent value. The only teams that really care are the ones who have to win it to get in a regional. It’s Omaha or bust now, and coaches are treating the SECT strictly as a way to set up for the regional.

Somebody mentioned us having to play a couple of teams coming off byes who will have fresh pitching. While that’s true and a disadvantage, those teams are gonna want to keep that pitching fresh for their regionals. For teams that have national seeds sewn up, their top guys are only gonna throw enough to keep them sharp. And if any of them are dealing with nagging injuries or pain, they’ll likely just get the week off.

I’d be absolutely shocked if we win it. But there’s a world where if everything aligns, we could potentially make a run. It’s a very, very low chance, but it’s not zero. I’ll watch until our final out.

And I think Jay will treat this Florida series just like those coaches will treat the SECT. Save some guys, give lesser used guys some opportunities to see if the switch magically flips for them, will rest guys with nagging injuries, etc…He’ll never punt a game, he’s gonna go all out to win with the guys he puts in there. But he’s gonna put some guys in there that he normally wouldn’t if he were going all in to win against Florida. He’s setting up for the SECT. I’m sure he’d love to win this series, but not at the expense of giving us the best chance possible to make a run in the SECT. We could get run-ruled 15-0 all 3 games this weekend and it’s not going to affect our chances of making a regional. Our only chance is to win the SECT. And I expect Jay to coach accordingly.
