That wouldn't be the first time that something like that happened. It happens all the time.
South Carolina is #18. If Auburn loses, they will have only 1 loss, but against the #18 team.
If LSU wins, they will also have only 1 loss, and that was against #4 Auburn.
Therefore, Auburn's only loss would be "worse" than LSU's only loss.
Regardless of their head-to-head matchup, LSU would be ranked higher.
You cannot always count head-to-head matchups.

Plus I thought a loss later in the season counted more against you. I would think a loss to the #18 team would knock them down...but how knows.
