I'm usually not a big Notre Dame fan, but LSU needs to follow them in this. Notre Dame allows people access to tickets by making a donation to ANY PART of the school to count, instead of the 100 dollar TAF requirement which only goes to TAF not the school, that is in SERIOUS TROUBLE!!
And I think we need to make cuts on the athletics side when a COLLEGE is messing around with people's scholarships and there ability to OBTAIN HIGHER EDUCATION, and sorry guys but that is more important than any football game
I don't completely agree with this as written. First, let me state that I don't believe that so much as a dime of TAF donations should be eligible for tax deductions. Donations to TAF are to the business of LSU athletics, not to the education side of LSU and should not receive any tax favored benefits.
This said, the TAF has control of certain assets because they have made real financial committments on behalf of LSU athletics. They need a means of meeting those committments. If you let people freely choose education or athletics, a huge number will choose education. They want to feel good about themselves and this wouldn't cost them anything. So if you were to do what ND does wrt contributions, then you also need to do what ND does wrt to spending, i.e. they will guarantee that the financial committments are met.

It should also be recalled that LSU Atheltics is not just some black hole.
There is a substantial mutilpier effect on the economy. Much of that money spent to maintain the program is spent here. Then we got tourism, hotels (including in the NOLA market), and a million of ther things which generate sales tax revenue
THe problem is that LOUISIANA has to stop the population migration out of the state that is now entering its third depressing decade
Thinks will just get worse till then. LSU and the University of Louisiana system seem to do a fine job of educating the best citizens for Houston , Dallas, Atlanta, and Chicago. Hopefully in the futre some will stay here in the future

football put lsu on the map, more and more out of state kids are coming here every year and they pay a shite load more tuition than any one from louisiana, so how can athletics be blamed? i have had 8 or 9 classes in the cox building, math lab in the cox building, tutoring in the cox building. think how many student and non student jobs are available because of lsu athletics.

What it means is highly qualified students will not go to LSU but will go to other universities that are either ranked higher or do offer them scholarships. The average incoming ACT drops, the university's ranking drops, and it becomes harder to attract talented students and professors. It's a negative feedback loop.

bayou rant, i am from atlanta and will be graduating in may. I am staying in baton rouge, and frankly if it was not for lsu athletics myself and a bunch of friends would never have even heard of lsu.

Hopefully your number can increase.

you do realize though other states dont have tops right... so paying out of state at lsu is still lower than paying instate at other schools.

Indeed, this is one hell of a problem without a simple or overnight answer. Even so, it needs to be addressed so to pave the road for future generations. Quite frankly, if not for the job and a couple of ties I have here, I am not sure I would be here either.

quote:Couple counterpoints -- one, the top students I'm talking about can also get scholarships at other schools; so the money issue is a wash. Two, TOPS is only available for instate students. Good universities (which LSU hops to become) also have to draw students from out of state.

So are Chavis' Copper's. and Haley's contracts in jeopardy because they haven't signed yet and supposedly has to be approved by the board of rich decision makers

Actually, Notre Dame requires a donation to their general fund. Donations to the athletic department do not qualify you for tickets. Also a donation to the general fund does not automatically get you tickets. It just gets your name into a lottery for the posibility of getting tickets.
My son is a Notre Dame alumnus and he goes through the process every year to get tickets to one or two games.
Just as a side note.... Notre Dame's stadium seats 80,000 and they average around 120,000 ticket requests per game.

But same goes with a donation to TAF, that 100 dollar donation does not get season tickets or even individual tickets
And my uncle went to Notre Dame, and can go to football games, and he NEVER donates to the athletic department
But yea i know it goes to the lottery but you get to request them after your donation but it doesn't automatically get you tickets
Still better process then fricking TAF, and yet Notre Dame survives without a program like TAF, and they suck! So people can't tell me the athletic program would flop without TAF

"The Bengal Legacy Scholarships for Non-Resident Sons and Daughters of LSU Graduates, the Board of Supervisors Scholarships and the Louisiana Freshman Merit Award would be eliminated."
These scholarships aren't going to make a huge difference. I promise you.
The Bengal Legacy was an EASY scholarship to get. VERY EASY. Just be Admitted, and prove that your "guardian" was an alumni. You get 75% off of out of state fees. Trust me, that's not a big deal. They aren't cutting $$$ to quality students. The upper-tier students who got this award will get others instead.
The BOS schollies were mostly one-time, small cash awards, as well as the "freshmen merit" scholly.

See my post about those specific awards.
LSU was already losing highly qualified students because money was being pumped into awards like Bengal Legacy and Summer Scholars.

The avg. ACT was on the rise despite the lack of quality schollies anyway. However, from what I was told,
eh, nevermind.

You will have to pay full price for your geek section tickets.

Bengal Legacy
I'm on Bengal Legacy and I'm a quality student, but supposedly my family makes "too much money" so i can't get academic scholarships. And if I wasn't on this Bengal Scholarship I would have kept my good grades and SAT scores in-state. Also to keep your legacy scholarship you have to maintain a 2.5 after every semester, and that is a pretty decent GPA for college, so its not like that money is going to bad students. So yea Bengal Legacy is a really good scholarship that isn't wasted on poor students!!
