Did they wear the winged leather michigan style helmets in 1908 or did they not even wear helmets then?
And are there prints of that old picture available anywhere?

From what I've read, even into the early 20's,helmets were for 'sissies' (though they would grow their hair long to protect their ears)

I hate how fans on this board make fun of Ole Miss for claiming the west championship in 2003. If you drive by the football practice facility we do the same stupid thing by claiming west titles in the late 90's when we never went to Atlanta.

Thanks, 123. I found a website that handmakes leather helmets for those old college and pro teams. Pretty cool to me.

One day, when my student loans diappear, I would love to have a college football room. A leather helmet would make a great addition to it! Also, I saw somewhere that someone posted that the 1908 team did not look like they bench pressed. Well, its true they were not as strong as today's teams, but they were every bit as tough or tougher! In 1903, 18 people died playing college football. Alabama's first All American, Bully Vandergraff, once came out of a game becuase a hit had left his ear hanging off. Team mates had to restrain him when he attempted to pull the ear off so he could go back in the game! Those guys back then were definitely tough.

I have my lsu stuff in my office, and I'm little by little adding to it. I'd like to have all the different eras of helmets in the mini versions, since I'm limited on space. I've found the leather, the billy cannon 50's helmet, the bert jones 70's helmet, the white 97 indy bowl helmet, and the current style. I'm still tryin to fin a Y.A. Tittle era gold helmet though.

Yes but Ole Piss hung their's up in Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium. Big difference than hanging them up in the indoor practice facility.

That's a nice touch to an office. My Alabama collection is still modest, but it's growing. Helmets through the years is definitly a nice touch- along those lines, a jersey from each era would be cool as well

I just don't have enough space for that. I have an autographe mike modano sweater that I'd love to get encased at some point so I'm saving a spot for that. Mike modano is definitely my man crush. I humped his leg when I got his autograph and had to be removed by security.
A little off topic. Stop judging me.

Yeah the limited space sucks. In my lottery fantasies, there's always a large room! And don't worry, no judgment here!

LSU wore helmets in 1908, I have a picture of a helmet form the 1908 team owned by a scub who played on the 1909-10 teams.

His great grand son has the cheats, pads, pants and helmet form the 1908-1910 teams.

Also 2 pictures I think were taken in New Orleans during the 1909 Sewanee game, I am still looking into the 2 photographs.

I think it is your father I need to talk with still, to check and see if any thing is left of the photographs.

Also to see if he has the reward handed out to the lettermen at the end of the season.

Don't you mean just about any title claimed before 1958 is meaningless?

And for the record, the LSU team of 1908 may be one of, if not the most impressive of all time...

Just did some reading about this team. Pretty impressive! The Michigan team in the same time frame from 1901-1905. 5 seasons 55-1 record. Total score 2821-42.

This is off topic, but where'd you get a picture of the 1908 team? By any chance, do you have one of the 1922 team? Seems like I recall from my Dad that my great-uncle E.G. Blakewood, Sr., played on that team or one around then.

Why does LSU not claim all of these

I think the AD position is that nothing awarded prior to the AP championship trophy is counted.

Ole miss and alabama can't be the only 2 schools who claim more nc's and titles than they really have
