I posted a very similar thread earlier this season after the Vandy game I believe. Then one of the main criticisms of my post was that we hadn’t gotten into SEC play yet, so my numbers would be skewed to competition.

With that in mind, now that we are farther along in the season, I thought I’d look at the numbers in their more complete form.

Of course, feel free to correct me on any numbers. I’m human.

In 2019, the LSU Defense has given up 237 points on 146 drives.

1.62 PPD (Points per defensive drive)

Now to put this number in perspective:

LSU’s 11 previous years have averaged out to

1.58 PPD

And LSU’s best year during that stretch, 2011, gave up

.92 PPD

And LSU’s worst year during that stretch, 2015, gave up

2.01 PPD

So by this metric, which I personally have a strong affinity for

The 2019 LSU defense is about .04 points per drive worse than an average LSU defense, which is not great, but it’s definitely not all time bad.

But it gives the idiots who need something to bitch about a reason to bitch.

Everybody knows this isn't a dominating defensive football team, but it doesn't have to be.

I mean no matter what dumbass Joel Klatt has to say..

There are still multiple first round draft picks on this defense. It is talented. It sucks because they are terribly confused when playing and lose that mental edge/toughness when the score is 28-7 or 33-13

Stats don't matter. Those people that complain about the defense use the "eye test" to tell you how much the defense sucks. Then they open another thread and complain because Ohio State is ranked number one, and how stupid the committee is because you can't judge a team based on the "eye test."

It's not a valid reason though. I would be ecstatic to only give up .04 more per drive if it meant scoring as much as we have. I dont know what the actual number is, but I guarantee you our offense is scoring much more than .04 increase per drive

It’s a very talented defense. If we played like we have in the first half this year for entire games it probably could have been a great defense.

That's the argument to make against the defense right here. Against the really good teams they have played one really great half on defense. It's there. Why we can't do it for a complete game should be one is debated/complained about. You never hear that on here though.

If there is one thing that costs us a championship this season, what do you think it will be?

Scoring at least one less point than another team.

i know i sound like a broken record but, fpi has lsu at #19 for defensive efficiency. fpi does not think lsu's d is a "problem"

FPI also has LSU at 4. I agree with your main point, but if you argue FPI is a joke bc it has Bama ranked ahead of LSU, then tough to use it as an argument because you like the defensive ranking.

To be honest I have no idea why we can’t do it for a full game.

I just want to see the defense consistently play with intensity for 4 quarters.

I don't know if anybody has the answer. I was very supportive of Orgeron keeping the D out against Arkansas to make a statement that he wanted them to play a complete game. Of course, they didn't do it though, so it was kind of counter productive.

My guess would be a combination of backing off of play calling, to try to make them go on longer drives plus the players just naturally giving less effort because the drives don't have as much meaning. That's a total guess though.

Another thing is that I think they are lacking that big time leader. Although, I think Stevens is coming on strong late to fill that role. You have an offense, lead by Burrow, who always keeps the light switch on. If he's on the field, he is expecting to score. We have missed that Devin White type player on the defensive side to make every drive seem like it's a game winning one. Just my two cents.
