Wanted to dig into our 3 pt defense. Lots of comparisons to Bama here as they are a similar team in play and ability.

LSU’s 3pt defense (by % makes) is 29.6% (16th in NCAA). So pretty damn good.
“But jimbeam, we are so horrible again the 3!!“ It comes down to, like Cam on offense, volume. We have allowed 786 attempts- 233 makes!!!!!

By comparison, Toledo has given up 766 attempts at a 29.8% made clip (2nd most attempts amongst top % defending teams)
Bama has given up 28.5% on 648 attempts (3rd out of top 25 3pt defending teams, huge drop off here from LSU and Toledo)

Breaking that down a little more,
Bama opponents average 25% of their points from 3.
LSU’s opponents average 33%.

Thoughts on what may be leading to this.
LSU possessions per game 74 (53rd)
Bama possessions per game 77 (13th)

LSU is 9th in scoring offense. 11th in scoring efficiency. 35th in 3pt attempts.

Bama is 89th in scoring efficiency, 20th in points per game.

So LSU is scoring EXTREMELY efficiently. Other teams have to play aggressively to keep pace most of the time, in most games. Thus, if teams fall behind, they start jacking 3s, in high volume. This thesis is obviously very simplistic, elementary.

Just wanted to have a discussion with some facts because you’ll see repeated on here every game “LSU cannot guard the 3”. Maybe it’s akin to how modern football is heavy on offensive production and defense will just have to suffer somewhat as a result. Idk

Thank you and I’ll hang up.

Another thing that could lead to more attempts against us is that we invite certain guys to take threes. Wade talked about this at some point this season that if someone isn’t a great shooter they are aren’t going to run them off the line.

Our first shot defense isn’t terrible when we get set up. We struggle with second chance and transition points.

Interesting takeaway from this too is 3 possessions per game represents a difference of 40 spots in the rankings. Small margins.

Unless the guy is a dead eye shooter, sometimes letting him shoot is a smart move. I’d let a sub 30 percent shooter let it fly.

For a big portion of the season when we were in that awful 1-3-1 zone we gave up a lot of easy 3s but since we’ve gone man we’ve been much better.

Our ability to switch everything is pretty impressive when we are in the man.
