Playing as a Sophmore in 1958 was a big deal in those days. Freshman only played on the Freshman Team. Then it was a rarity that a Sophmore was allowed to start. I remember Dietzel saying he did not even know who he was at practice. After practice the Assistant Coaches all talked about some kid named Mickie. So Dietzel started watching him in practice and Mickie was elevated to the First Team or in those days the White Team. Thanks Mickie for being a "True LSU Tiger"!!!!!!!!!

I worked as a runner at the BBM&H firm as a college student. Mickey was always willing to talk LSU Football, even with a lowly runner.. that really impressed me as a young man. The firm had several agents on staff so lots of athletes could be seen in the halls and Mickey didn't treat us any different than he treated them. Billy Cannon was a frequent visitor also but wasn't as cordial as Mickey but he was okay.
I think pretty much everyone that knew him liked him, which, isn't easy for a lawyer.
does anyone know how he died ? I didn't know he was in poor health.

RIP Mickey. I had the pleasure of meeting Mickey many years ago. A class act and a true gentleman. Well liked and very respected as a lawyer.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mr Mickey through my father-in-law, He and his family attended my wedding years ago.
I remember the little sandwiches Mickey made for the tailgate parties, man they were GOOD. I will also never forget Oct 11 1997, My birthday weekend and by father-in-law took me to the LSU/Fla game. Mr Mickey gave us his press box seats! Mr Mickey, you were and always will be in my heart!

I knew of Mr. Mickey's passing and was thrilled to find this thread remembering him. My aunt had sent his obituary to my father, and I was reading it on Saturday before watching the game with my family.
I knew Mr. Mickey about as well as someone several decades his junior would have, but he was a very close friend of my father's and I have heard few people spoken of more highly than he was and continues to be.
In reading his obituary, however, it wasn't the river of his personal accomplishments (and there were MANY) that stood out the most. It was this.
"He considered so many close friends as family and cherished them. You know who you are."
All hail "the guy who caught the pass." Goodbye, sir.
