National Championship was a lot more loosely defined in those days, sportsfan. The Clemson win sealed the deal.

Army, Auburn, Iowa, Oklahoma, Syracuse, etc all claimed the best team, but they (mostly) faded away after LSU went undefeated and untied.

Also, the National Championship Game has been played in NOLA 3 times since the BCS was started (2003 season). LSU has played in 100% of those games.

Not at all. LSU finished the season #1 in the AP poll. LSU was AP champions and we’d claim the national championship and it would be recognized just the same had LSU lost to Clemson. There are plenty of pre-1970s national champions who lost their bowl game.

And other lists had named Iowa #1. Almost every sports mag had their own list.

Kind of like boxing champions with varying lists. 1958 or so was about the time that nearly all the bowls began to get big TV viewership. And the end of regular season polls were no longer considered the last word.

And UPI (an important news service at the time) had named Iowa #1

Nope LSU won the AP and UPI (coaches) national championship. Iowa won the bullshite FWAA championship.

Correct on UPI. But again, those were only regular season polls.

Once TV ratings for bowl games exploded (in the late 1950's), the bowl games became much more important.

When bowl viewership exploded, the AP & UPI regular season polls started to look undependable. The #1 teams lost many times. they finally held off on naming National Champs AFTER the bowl games (fans didn't take the AP/UPI regular season polls seriously for obvious reasons)

quote:

In the preceding decade, the UPI coaches poll national champion lost its bowl game three times: 1960 (Minnesota), 1964 (Alabama), and 1965 (Michigan State).

The change to the January final poll was well-timed as the top-ranked team in the UPI coaches poll lost its bowl game five more times in the 1970s: in 1974 (Alabama), 1975 (Ohio State), 1977 (Texas), 1978 (Penn State), and 1979 (Ohio State). The sole exception was undefeated Pittsburgh in 1976.
