This is where people let impressions and small sample sizes trick them into seeing patterns in data that are really just random fluctuations. If he were consistently poor in SEC play, that would be one thing. As you have pointed out, that’s just not the case. That has only added to the impression that he didn’t hit well against SEC pitching last year. While it was true both last year and this year that his power numbers are down in conference play (9 HR in SEC vs 19 non-conference last year), he still slugged .580 in SEC games last year (2nd on the team) and had a .404 OBP (3rd on the team). I think it’s fair to say he’s inconsistent in conference play, but not that he can’t hit SEC pitching.
