I would rather LSU go all in on only one QB each year rather than multiple. You run into a situation of quarterbacks transferring if they lose out on the competition. For example, whoever that QB was that transferred when he lost out to Jennings and then was having to compete with a younger QB in Harris.

That transfer is our depth.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that Purdue transfer...

That makes a senior, two juniors, a redshirt freshman, and a true freshman for LSU in 2016... I can't even think of the last time we had that much QB depth on the team... 2006 with Jamarcus, Flynn, and Perrilloux comes to mind, but otherwise.

Sorry, but tha fact that Idea that Les likes this kid that much is a giant red flag given his history with recruiting QBs.

1. FOH with the Les bashing
2. It's Cam Cameron who likes the kid that much. Cam knows what he's doing.

It sucks that we're evidently missing out on Narcisse, but I trust Cameron will find his guy in 2017 to go with Dinkelmann in 2018.

Where are you getting this from?!? All indications (unless I have missed something in the last few minutes) would indicate that he is coming to LSU. Please correct me if I am wrong.

He doesn't make an announcement until 6pm, but go check all the recent posts in the Narcisse threads on the Recruiting board.

I hope it pans out, because not having other QB's sign or recruited could come back to bite LSU and Miles in the arse again.

I'm excited about Franks, but talk about putting all of your eggs in one basket. I'm thinking about injuries. Maybe we need to copy Ohio State, and stock up.

When you multiple QBs in one class, not only is one of them very likely to transfer, but they are also taking a scholarship away from other positions.

Guys who were on scholarship here and never contributed like Rettig or Rivers also hurt the depth of the team at other positions. You only have 85 scholarships. You don't want too many of those going to QBs. I'd say 5 is about right, with their classifications being staggered.

You also don't want to only have 2 scholarship QBs who both happen to be underclassmen. That was horrible.

We have plenty of QB depth now and more to come

How many QBs do you people want?

There is a pretty big difference between recruiting a QB with the intention to be your starting QB and recruiting a QB to provide quality depth. I've separated them for you below in case you had trouble doing it for yourself.

quote:

Ryan Perrilloux - #6 overall player in 2005 recruiting class... named 2007 SECCG MVP prior to being dismissed from team for disciplinary reasons.

Jarrett Lee - #117 overall player in 2007 recruiting class... led the SEC in passing efficiency in 2011, en route to undefeated regular season and SEC Championship.

Russell Shepard - #3 overall player in 2009 recruiting class... changed positions in sophomore year, contributing as a runner and receiver in complimentary role.

Zach Mettenberger - #117 overall player in 2009 recruiting class... 20-6 record as LSU's starting QB.. only LSU QB to throw for 2500 yards in consecutive seasons. Set school record for total yards per game in 2013.

Gunner Kiel - #27 overall player in 2012 recruiting class... enrolled at Notre Dame on the eve of the early enrollee signing period. Ranked 18th in the nation in QB Rat as a redshirt sophomore at Cincinnati.

Hayden Rettig - #152 overall player in 2013 recruiting class... transferred to Rutgers after redshirt freshman season and was ineligible to play in 2014.

Brandon Harris - #75 overall player in 2014 recruiting class... 0-1 record as LSU's starting QB... threw for 450 yards with 6 TDs and 2 INTs as a true freshman.

Feleipe Franks - #47 overall player in 2016 recruiting class

With the exception of Russell Shepard, and possibly Hayden Rettig, who will be challenging for the starting job at Rutgers this year, Les Miles has recruited some elite talents at the QB position... unfortunately, Perrilloux was dismissed as a redshirt sophomore, Lee's development was stunted as a redshirt freshman, and Gunner Kiel didn't have the chest to play at a premiere program.

Which has left us with....

quote:

Jordan Jefferson - #324 overall player in 2008 recruiting class... 23-7 record in his three years as LSU's starting QB. Only LSU QB to beat Nick Saban (twice) since Matt Flynn.

Chris Garrett - #492 overall player in 2009 recruiting class... had his scholarship revoked

Zach Lee - #348 overall player in 2010 recruiting class... received $5 million to sign an MLB contract and is doing extremely well in baseball.

Jerrard Randall - #186 overall player in 2011 recruiting class.. transferred to Arizona after redshirt freshman year.

Stephen Rivers - #617 overall player in 2011 recruiting class... transferred to Vanderbilt after redshirt sophomore year.

Jeremy Liggins - #263 overall player in 2012 recruiting class... failed to qualify academically at LSU and enrolled at Ole Miss following JUCO.

Anthony Jennings - #213 overall player in 2013 recruiting class... 8-4 record as LSU's starting QB.

Justin McMillan - NR in 2015 recruiting class... redshirt freshman candidate

Jordan Jefferson and Anthony Jennings remain the only quarterbacks from this group to see any significant game time as an LSU player... with expected results. They should have never seen the field as true sophomores had Option A gone according to plan, and yet Jefferson was able to produce at least middling results with Jennings having the potential to do the same (until Brandon Harris is named the starter).

I have no doubt he's going to be great but I don't like putting all my eggs in one basket. You have to prep for the future and have insurance in case something happens. You don't know what can happen to Franks from here to whenever. It's like a business and you need to be smart in recruiting.

I guarantee we'll have transfer when Franks comes in so you got to keep recruiting the position until you have gold. Especially LSU who seems to struggle finding consistency at the QB position. Miles has been hit hard with this recruiting philosophy before at LSU. It's a huge gamble not worth the risk. Franks didn't seem to mind another QB coming in anyway.

You can't blame people for being reserved about this especially with our recent history. We have QB transfers almost EVERY year.

We have 4 quarterbacks this year and we will have 5 next year. If they all go down we are screwed anyways with or without a 6th guy

We're not going to have 5 next year. You'll have attrition for sure. We need to stockpile QBs and then let the attrition sort itself out. We have no problem taking 10 TEs a year so I don't see why we should ever stop slowing on the QB recruiting front until we get someone to come in that you know is going to be a stud.

Probably not going to matter anyway. I have a feeling Harris going to light it up by his Junior year.

We're not though

We took McMillian last year, Franks for 2016, probably Thompson for 2017 and Dinkleman for 2018

Who do you see as a potential transfer candidate in 2016?

Anthony Jennings would have three years in the system, and assuming he would need to sit out a year per transfer rules, he would have one year of eligibility remaining.

Brandon Harris isn't going anywhere... he knows that he's the immediate future.

Danny Etling transferred into the program just this past offseason, I would imagine it's highly unlikely that he transfers again at the end of this year.

Justin McMillan has openly stated that it is his intention to redshirt, learn the system, and be a "program guy." He could transfer when Franks comes in, but I don't really see it happening.... his only other offers out of high school were UNLV and Arkansas State.
