I deal with this a lot. I try to get the law enforcement people to exercise judgment, which in some cases is asking for the impossible. If the victim seems in a position where she could be in danger, arrest. If the parties are not in such a position, like the bad guy has gone home and is asleep in bed, give him a misdemeanor ticket. But most of the time, they just arrest the guy, and often the claims turn out to be not as originally presented or the victim wants the charges dropped.

Simple battery is a misdemeanor. If he injured her significantly, all this changes and the charge is second degree battery, requiring an arrest.

If this was simple battery, I would expect some sort of internal discipline. I would caution folks to not judge this guy either way until more facts come out.

Next construction needs to be a football player facility/prison. Let's just lock them up until the season starts so they can't get in trouble.
