Lane is the new honey badger. He takes whatever he wants.

I think this is more about what Blake Baker wants and how much power Lane and the AD are giving him. Olsen is Blake’s right hand man. I’m sure he expressed how important Olsen is to him, and Lane and Verge found an extra $100 or $200k or whatever was needed to keep him around.

It’s clear Lane trusts Blake and part of his pitch to him to stay and not take the Tulane job was that he was basically going to be the HC of the entire defense. Lane is ultimately the boss of the whole staff, obviously, and they ultimately all report to him. But I think he realizes how important this 1st season is and wants to devote as much of his time to installing the offense and coaching everybody up. Not just for ‘26, but ‘27. We didn’t talk a whole lot about how many portal guys we got with multiple years of eligibility left. We’ll obviously get some ‘27 starters in the portal next year, but we’ve got quite a few already on the roster who Lane can go ahead and begin developing. One of the glass half full benefits of Leavitt not being able to go through spring is how many reps the backups will get.
