I didn't know that Gary Lundy died in 2004:
quote:
Gary Lundy, a multi award-winning sports columnist and reporter, died this afternoon after collapsing this morning in the newsroom. The mild-mannered, dry-witted Lundy was widely respected and was friends to everyone. As a journalist, he was fair minded and pulled no punches in his columns. He would have been 50 next month.
Say a prayer for Gary and his family. Those who knew him and/or his work are encouraged to comment here.
UPDATE: A note to staff from Editor Jack McElroy: "A terrible thing happened in the newsroom today. Gary Lundy collapsed shortly after arriving at work. Paramedics were called, and Gary was taken to Fort Sanders Medical Center, where he died a short while later of a heart attack. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gary, his wife and his son on this very sad afternoon."
Here's his bio: "Gary Lundy, who graduated from the University of Tennessee, has been a sports journalist for 25 years. He has been honored as Associated Press Sports Editors' national columnist of the year. Also, he has been named Tennesseee Sportswriter of the Year three times by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association and once by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association."
For all of his awards, they didn't come close to matching the respect and love he had from all who knew him.

Like others have stated, the stadium becomes much more lively if the competition is good. A little more wound up at night of course but I'll tell you, some of the loudest crowds I've seen there were UGA in '03 and 'Bama '08, two day games.
this is it... all boils down to competition, and as another pointed out, the level of LSU's play against that competition. Loudest game attended for me was also UGA 2003 (DAY GAME!). So loud the young tween-age girl in front of us was crouching down between the bleachers w/ her fingers in her ears.
TS does not deserve it's reputation when it comes to ALL games. That's for sure.

We have a 21 game winning streak at night. Case closed.

I don't know. Never been in there. Going down in Nov for my first game in Tiger Stadium. I expect to be scared out of my pants. Sitting in upper level. Shaking isn't over rated and noise in a barrel isn't also. It helps if the fans raise hell the entire game and don't go home.

I think...at times....it can be....but big games.....never.
Now UT on the other hand.....it's WAAAAAY overrated....and i've been there twice.

It is overrated, but, at the same time, it's legend is absolutely accurate.
But it is not overrated in the sense that Notre Dame is overrated.
Ronnie Lott recently said that he has never been a part of any football experience and atmosphere like the one at Tiger Stadium in 1979 when USC visited LSU. He included Superbowls in that estimation.
I would say that the legend is past its prime, but the 2003 Georgia game and 2007 UF games were probably the loudest stadiums this decade and that's not exaggerating.

Given that any discussion of overrated vs underrated is a relative measure, what venues around the country are consistently loud for every single game, cupcake or not, day or night?
And if nothing meets that, then what venue at least does so much more consistently than LSU does?
The Swamp probably meets the latter test, at least, if not both. But it's generally recognized as such by everyone.
I understand crowd performances like the Vandy game this year can be disappointing, but we're not entirely alone there. I mean, the Horseshoe was loud as hell for the OSU-USC game. It wasn't remotely that loud for the OSU-Navy day game.

Country VolFan,
Bear Bryant use to say it was the most difficult venue he ever coached in but he always went home the winner. It didn't intimidate him.
I think for teams like Tulane, ULL, MSU, Ole Missed and even Troy last year (remember only the extreme hard core fans or drunks were left after halftime of that game) the place can be intimidating.
Since SEC teams play at UF, UT, UGA and Auburn it is hard to believe that our place is any more enthusiastic. They get use to hostile crowds.
It may win us a delay of game penalty or two for the visitors and it may spook the coaches or assistants on the sidelines but I think once the initial contact is made, the big boys of the SEC are not intimidated by Joe the Plummer Tiger Fans lol
