If may have changed, but the athletic dept probably has separate funding for them to attend school to get their degrees. It is probably up to the AD as to who they say they will pay for but I know it used to happen several years ago. After playing ball, I was a GA in the AD at a small school and it was done several times. It is used to encourage NFL and NBA level athletes to attend your school. They know they will be taken care of if they leave early to try out for a team/get drafted and can still get their degree.

Neatest story I ever heard was pro golfer Jerry Pate went back to finish his degree so he could graduate with his daughter.
