In 1968 when LSU and TCU last played, TCU was counted as a conference game

Really, before 1972 SEC conference scheduling was all over the board. And even with scheduling all teams within an 8 yr period, some teams still played more than six games until 1978.

But when Georgia Tech left the SEC after 1963 and Tulane left after 1965, some teams had a hard time scheduling 6 SEC games. Really not sure how a particular team was selected as a "designated" conference game. Tennessee, for instance played South Carolina in 1965 as well as Georgia Tech, but South Carolina was their designated 'conference' game intead of Tech, who had just left.

In 1968 had a strange schedule. LSU only played four actual SEC teams, Kentucky, Alabama, Ole Miss and Miss State. TCU and Tulane were selected as "designated conference games". LSU actually played as many SWC teams that year (four) as SEC teams. Miami-Fla was the other team.

LSU won, 10-7 on a Mark Lumpkin field goal with around 5:00 left in the game.

I recall that season - believe the Tigers went 4-0 against the SWC.

One of the more interesting factoids I've read recently.

Good work.
