If the playoff field were bigger, would college football stop with the cupcakes?

Who really wants to ever see LSU play SLU? When should Alabama ever play Arkansas State? Austin Peay sure made a matchup for UGA!
If it weren’t such a risk for scheduling Oklahoma, USC, Michigan, etc., it would happen more often.

LSU is not even trying to be a playoff team

Then we’d lose more games than we already do. LSU needs three cupcakes to make bowl eligibility here lately. We haven’t even sniffed the playoff since it was created and still wouldn’t have even if it was 8 teams.

and yet, the Advocate was running stories about how we now should schedule Southern and Grambling
Fwiw, "cupcake" is too broad a term. The preferred opponent should be weak enough to beat up on, but still carry a measure of name value.
For a major conference team, that should be a Group of Five team. Shouldn't dip into the FCS (let the Group of Five programs do that).
Heck, I think it'd be good to split the FBS officially as it is. Let Boise run the show in the Group of Five level, let teams like Troy etc challenge to play them.

Maybe I asked the question the wrong way. It’s not just LSU. All of the major schools pad their schedules/records with multiple cupcakes. What would it take to lessen that?
The reasons they’re done:
1) More home games
2) Better chance to make a bowl
3) Better chance to keep record unblemished (stay ranked high - better chance for TV and maybe playoffs)
4) Scrimmages to keep team healthy and work out the kinks

I just think they should cut out FBS teams playing FCS teams, but I get it, FCS teams get paid pretty good for these games so they won’t stop doing it...
