I just finished reading Bob Brodhead’s book “Sacked!”

Should absolutely be required reading for anyone posting on tRant. That disgusting crap paved the way for Joe Dean to plunge LSU football to the depths of the 90s.
I can guarantee that anyone who can’t see the good ole boy network politics going on in LSU athletics right now (or thinks it’s a good thing) has not read this book.

just wait until they write a book about O's coup.

Why should I post the huge wall of text it would take to summarize it? It’s a recommendation...read the book.

Purple and gold rabbit coats and stories of the "back room" at Phil's Oyster Bar!
Bob started pinching straws and the good ole boys who were draining the athletic department of $$$ got upset.

I was a Freshman at LSU when it all went down. LSU replaced Broadhead with Joe Dean who was a genuinely nice man but he didn’t have a clue how to run the athletic department.
As an example, Dean actually forgot to order busses fir a Tiger Band Trip to an away game against State.
His hire of Mike Archer was simply awful. It destroyed the program for over a decade.
As another poster said, history seems to be repeating itself.

Broadhead uncovered a lot of corruption in the athletic department and even uncovered BOS ticket scams. I’d be curious to see what kind of checks and balances he instituted.

From a reviewer at goodreads.com:
I wasn't a fan of Bob Broadhead during his reign as athletic director at LSU. I was a kid at the time though so most of my opinion was based on what adults around me were saying. When I came across this book I decided to read it to give Broadhead a fair shake.
I have no doubt he greatly improved the business side of the department, and it's true he brought in several coaches who became LSU legends. However, to hear Broadhead tell it, he was the lone genius surrounded by a cast of bumbling idiots, from the chancellor, to the university president, the board of supervisors, and his coaches. Broadhead repeatedly violated state laws and university regulations. He has an excuse for every single violation. He writes off many of the violations by claiming ignorance of the law (since when is that an excuse?)or stating that he thought the laws were stupid so he decided to override them.
I found it funny that Broadhead concluded the book with the lyrics to Sinatra's I Did It My Way. Broadhead certainly did things HIS way and that's what led to his demise. After reading the book I can't really say my opinion has changed. He's still full of hot air.

From the Advocate's obituary of Arnsparger:
By 1985, the relationship between Arnsparger and his athletic director, Brodhead, began to crumble.
Brodhead was caught trying to eavesdrop through bugged offices when NCAA investigators were talking to LSU athletes about the recruitment of basketball prospect Tito Horford. Naturally, a furor erupted, and everyone connected with LSU athletics came under scrutiny and offered opinions — everyone but Arnsparger, who would not talk about the matter.
“With each no comment he uttered, Arnsparger hammered another nail in my coffin,” Brodhead wrote later in his book, “Sacked.”

All those incidents are covered, in great detail, in the book. Brodhead also detailed illegal activities as or more onerous committed by BOS members and department officials who were good Ole boys...that were never investigated or swept under the rug.
What makes the story is the insane back-stabbing, double speak, and scheming that goes on to the detriment, ultimately, of LSU. Just so those with their hands in the pie can continue to exert their control and skim off the top, program be damned.
Hell at one point, a former governor (McKeithen) basically threatened Brodhead’s life in a public hearing for trying to fire Jerry Stovall after he went 0-8 in the SEC (asked Brodhead if he was wearing a bulletproof vest).

This is what made Saban great. Top to bottom in the athletic department he demanded excellence, and everyone knew it. Absolutely killed the good ole boy network and access that Miles kept until the end. Here comes coach O and everyone gets a piece of cake, media, BOS and so on.. Too many hands in the cookie jar and barring some miracle it’s gonna repeat the bad times.
