I'm not sure if you remember it but for the first 5 years of the BCS the AP was part of the BCS ranking. If the BCS thought it was irrelevant why did they include it? It was only after 2003 that the AP asked to be removed from the whole system.

It seems many people have forgotten this.

Bill gates wanted to put up around 38 million dollars to finance a game between LSU and USC , two weeks after the national title game ,LSU wanted the game USC didn’t, got in a bad argument with a USC fan, who said the contacted LSU for a game next year in 2004 in LSU

The BCS era ended split championships.

You wouldn’t recognize a differing AP #1 as champion under the CFP system so logically you shouldn’t under the BCS system.

That’s why we started the BCS in the first place. Some of you are so daft when it comes to this.

The only reason anyone gave the AP poll any credence in 2003 was because the AP poll was the benchmark for many years up until just 5 years prior to 2003, so people were so used to the AP poll being relevant. Now that we’ve been under the BCS and CFP system for so many years people have gotten over that

It was supposed to end them by including the two polls whose National Champion declarations were most respected. It did not just include the Coaches poll but the AP as well despite the fact that the Coach's trophy was the agreed upon BCS trophy (a single organization isn't going to give out two trophies for the same thing). The hope was that this would guarantee unanimity between them by including them both. It is a canard that whatever credibility the AP had in 2003 was purely residual. They were a part of the BCS ranking! But this was one of the fundamental flaws of the system. The AP was still free to distribute their trophy despite agreeing to be part of the BCS ranking which meant that they could go off the reservation whenever they wanted to. And in 2003 they did.

The only way the BCS could have ever truly eliminated a split title would have been to get AP to fold its TROPHY, and not merely its poll, into the BCS. They should have created a brand new trophy and had both the Coach's and AP sign off on it. It's weird that it comes down to trophies but it kind of did.

You’ve been talking yourself in circles this whole thread.

I don't think that means what you think it does. I've been consistent in saying schools count trophies, they don't just look at historic results and decide to give themselves championships. You just don't like the way it works, and that's fine, but don't blame me.

And the fact that that's your only response shows you really have nothing else.

Here's a clue:

Google results for, "who won the college football championship in 2003?"

Hint: Every single result mentions USC winning the AP title.

And the computer portion of the formula helped to level the AP bias which was a big reason USC got left out. That was the year USC played 1 ranked team.

Lots of similarities to this year.

Whether or not you give it credit or not doesnt change the fact that it was a very real title, very well recognized and legitimate and since the NCAA didn't and doesn't crown a football champion

Wow talk about a swing and a miss

In 2003, Pete Carroll was a total a-hole when he tried to disrespect LSU‘s national championship by clinging to the old AP poll and refusing to recognize the BCS. Total jerk…
