I get what you’re trying to say, but the logic is a bit off. If the worst had to vacate a win, then that would make them that much (more) worse, so they’d still be the worst.

Maybe you could say something like “they better hope the worst team’s opponents don’t have to vacate a win or two,” but even that doesn’t quite land where you want it.
